My new TR3 arrives soon and I dn’t want to install Norton on it because it drastically slowed down all internet functions on my Thinkpad. I have heard the same thing from other folks.  At the same time I don’t want to be open to viruses so can anyone recommend a good one they use?

As far as blocking popups with Internet Explorer, I highly recommend the Google Toolbar.

It’s a free download from Google, and has the added benefit of providing special google functionality always there on your browser.  It deeply amuses me that people sell software to take care of this problem.

To get it

- Go to http://www.google.com (chances are remote that you didn’t know this part already)
- Click on the ‘Services and Tools’ link that’s underneath the search field.
- Toward the bottom of the page is a section labeled ‘Google tools’  Click on the third link under that section (Google Toolbar) and follow the prompts from there.

As far as anti-virus software goes.  I’ve always had good luck with McAfee, but YMMV.  I suspect that Norton might not be as big of a hog on your new TR since you’ll likely be getting more memory than you had on your Thinkpad.

For popup blocking and so many other things (like tabs, two-click translations, URL completion hotkeys and more) I really like MyIE2 .

Trendmicro pc cillin 2004 for antivirus n firewall is great and far less invasive, from a resource perspective, than Norton.

Avant browser plug in for IE works great for blocking pop-ups and it has many other neat features.

I agree with George on Trend Micro’s PC-cillin for virus protection, firewall and anti-spam filtering. It is a joy to install and use and has automatic update notification that is usually as out-in-front of new viruses as it can get.
