i have a kingmax 512 pc2700 DDR333 ram upgraded myself, as long as you use 172pin microDIMM DDR Ram you will be fine.
for example, kingston 512 microDIMM DDR333

btw, the TR’s motherboard only supports up to DDR266, although DDR333 ram has backward capability, but it’s a little waste if solely use it on TR

I am on my way getting them. I am so excited to have 1GB or ram in my VAIO. I still havent found a down side to the laptop. I was lucky enough that the battery is in a good shape as well. It has 6 charge cycles, and it give over 3 hours with dimmed screen. However the battery indicator is weird. From 30% it drops to 12 immediately, and from then on, it gives me over another hour. Weird.

Anyways, thanks for the memory issue update, I will get it for sure.

Same here, it happened to me after a year of purchase, guess it’s the battery’s depreciation affect the metering.

some laptops have “refresh or recalibrate battery” function built into the bios, to solve the metering problem, TR does not.

I see, thanks. I will live with that I guess for now. If I purchase a new battery in the future, would that work well? i guess it is about the CHIP on the battery, right?

Honestly I am not sure, however since TR doesn’t offer refresh (recalibrate) battery function, the weird metering problem will happen sooner or later on every battery it uses

Isn’t there a Software way to recalibrate a battery?

I tried some, but none seems to work.

searched the web, and found a very simple way of recalibration.

1. recharge fullly your battery,
2. set a boot password for your TR,
3. reboot to the password entry screen,
4. close the lid, let the battery discharge itself till the tr switch off automatically.
5. plug-in ac power and switch it on.

just did it, will see if it works.

one weird thing discovered during discharging: the battery indicator on the front panel is not OS related, as no OS entered during that period. it started to flash when there were 45 min remains.
this at least indicates that the battery metering error is not OS dependent, but more or less a hardware error.

Great , thanks. Let me ask one thing. How long did the battery run for? I mean with the LCD off, HDD not spinning, CD rom not spinning, it should last for close to 7 hours I guess. So if that is the case, then the 45 minute battery light blinking might be, if it switches on around 10%.

Would that be? Well, provided we had this conversation less than 7 hours ago, and you already discharged your battery from full charge, I guess not.

What might we do to get this resolved? I was quite busy, but I will look into it now. Also do you have MOD rights? We should merge this topic off to a new one, or if you dont, we can just repost everything (copy paste), and delete these posts.

discharged the battery from full charge in vaio boot screen, it lasted for 2hr45min.
i use another power management call sony power management, it’s a new software developed for tr5 and up.

i can send it to you, all tr model compatible

Yes, I have that as well, somehow after having installed both at serparate times, I have sticked with the original one. Can you tell me a few things that makes the new power management tool more valuable?

Can you get some similar information out of that as well, like charge cycles, and other stuff? By the way, how accurate is that Charge cycle? I cycled it twice already, but the counter jumped only once up, it was 4, and now 5.

The new power management doesn’t display charge cycle, but the design is much more intuitive.

I don’t know my charge cycle as the software doesn’t display that

You can install PowerPanel to see more information about your battery.

I see, I guess I am going to stick with Power Panel. I like how many options I can set in it, like in Battery, turn off the CD drive, and Memory stick at all times, since I never owned a single memory stick. I wish it was an SD reader lol.

I ordered my memory just to turn back to the original thread, and it should be here for Friday. I will post back the results of the upgrade.

And here is also a very good site about Lithium chemistry. It says that we should stay away of constant discharges. It says Partial discharge is better than a full discharge.
