I see lot’s of posts here for these models but I don’t know what they are. Are these Sony models that are released in other countries? Sonystyle,com (USA) doesn’t list these models at all. I just ordered the Sony TXN17p7 which is basically the same as the Sony TXN17p I believe. Is the TX4 the same machine in a different country? Sorry for the noob quesiotn, but I am new ot this board and new to the TX series!

Yup you’re right - the TX3 for example is the UK equivalent of the US TX 850 (I think!) - same model, different number - the TX3 does not have the antenna/cingular thingy.

Just have a lok at sonystyle.co.uk for the UK range and compare to the sonystyle.com US range…

Well, I live in the U.S and we have different model numbers than in the U.K and elsewhere.

This is as far as I know roughly.

The TX650/670/690 are known as TX1 elsewhere
The TX750/770/790 as known as TX2 elsewhere
The TX850/TXN15/TXN17/TXN19 are known as TX3/TX4 elsewhere.

From what I have looked around surprisingly, the TX4s seem to have the exact same specs as the TX3s, can’t find a difference.

In the U.S at least, the TX6XXs and TX7XXs have an antenna for Cingular’s EDGE service, the TXNs have an antenna for Sprint’s EVDO service and the TX8XXs do not have an antenna at all, just like the TX1/2/3/etc.

In Japan, I know some models have a built in TV tuner I think.

Yes, the TXN17 is the exact same thing as the TXN19, only difference is that the TXN19 has a slate blue lid only, whereas the TXN17 has a charcoal and I think platinum and red color as well.

Also, I have noticed that the TXNs in North America are slightly thicker than all of the other TX’s, and another user on notebookreview.com noted this as well.

Ok. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I have heard some of these TXes have had issues with their fans being on all the time. People have had the same issue with the UX models. When I had my UX 180 the fan was always on. Since the UX 90 that I later got has a solid state flash drive instead of a hard drive, the fan hardly comes on and doesn’t get half as hot as the 180 did. I guess the TX has similar issues. They are cramming a lot of components in a tiny space and it has got to get hot in there. I know my unit, the TXN17p7, comes with the antenna. I hope the fan issue has been already addressed in this model, but I guess with a tight space and a hard drive, heat build up is going to an issue and the fan is the way to cool it off. I will know when I get my TX later this week.

Yes, I have a Vaio TX790P which is an older model than the TXN you ordered. No matter what I did to it, the fan would turn on a few minutes after powering on the computer and it would run nonstop unfortunately, no matter what I did.

I have a very strong feeling however that the issue has at least been partially solved in the TX3/TXN you have ordered. I keep hearing that Sony quietly fixes tiny problems in each new revision of the TX. For instance, I heard several complaints of light leakage at the bottom of the first TXs but that it has slowly improved over each revision of the TX.
