I just bought a Vaio TX790P for only $460 from a guy in San Francisco, waiting for him to ship it, should reach me in Houston by Wednesday.

The only problem is that there is a vertical white band running down the middle of the screen. The seller says it probably happened when he closed the notebook in a wrong fashion a couple of times.

Here’s a couple of pics he provided me.

I’m sure most of you mature, lovely adults have much more knowledge about laptop repair and parts than I do, but I’m also a pretty young immature guy.

What could be the cause of this? The seller says that the entire LCD has to be replaced, but thats a $520 screen from Sony and $600+ screen elsewhere.
I think perhaps also the cables/connection behind the LCD may need replacing/repairing instead? That would be much cheaper than replacing the LCD right?

I asked him to hook it up to an external monitor but he said he didn’t have one to test it out. I will assume the line doesn’t show on an external monitor.

Maybe even jiggling the screen a bit could fix it? Most likely not, but I’ll pray. 

What should I do once I get the laptop? Take it into a repair shop so they can diagnose the exact problem? A number of different things can cause that line to appear right?

I would guess there’s a off chance the signal cable needs to be reseated or replaced, although it’s far more likely the LCD needs to be replaced.

What makes the majority of people I ask say that the whole LCD has to be replaced instead of just some cables? I guess I am being optimistic that it would be a cheap repair.

Even if I never get the LCD fixed, I could probably sell the notebook for more and still make a profit right since the notebook itself is worth around $1800? 

I should be receiving it sometime Wednesday.

Please, anyone else have any advice?

LCDs aren’t easily fooled with.  After they’ve been assembled it’s hard/expensive to do anything with them.

Okay, I’m gonna receive the laptop sometime Wednesday most likely.
What can I do to root out the problem? As far as everyone I’ve asked knows, it could range from the videocard to a cable to the LCD itself.

What can I do to pinpoint the exact cause of this vertical white band on the LCD???
