Hi All,

We’ve got a pair of TR5MPs in the office, both of which could do with a reinstall and a fresh HD. Acessing the drive is easy enough (once I’d found the hidden case screw under the RAM cover ) but I’m having trouble locating stock of the right drives.

Ideally I was going to put a toshiba MK6006GAH in each one. The only availabel 60GB model, however, is the 6008GAH, which has the ZIF connector. Seems like the old ones have been discontinued and all the suppliers I’ve tried have run out. Both these machines have a good 18 months to 2years of life left in them if I can get new drives.

Does anyone know where I can still get hold of one of the old sort? I’ll settle for a 40GB model if need be.

ebay.. the mk6006gah (60gig) and mk4006gah (40gig) are plentiful because the 4th gen ipod uses them. =)  good luck.

I had a look around on ebay, but the only ones available seem to have been sucked out of iPods. I know they shoud work, but I make a rule of never buying refurbs or secinod hand kit where moving parts are involved.

Hard drives especially have a tendency to rot. They’ll still work, but after a while the number of bad sectors gets too big and the performance of the drive plummets.

I replaced a similar drive in a Vaio TX1 with a 6006GAH about 8 weeks ago. It had quite an astonishing effect on the speed of the system, even though it had only just had it’s old drive reformatted.

I may just habve to bite the bullet and go with the 8007GAH when they’re available. (the 8009GAH has the ZIF connector, in this case) That should be nice and expensive.
