Hi,
I have a question for everybody. I realy like the TR2a, but I keep thinking that I’m traveling with a device that’s worth $2000. Though I love the TR2a much, much, much better then the fujitsu p2110. It seems that if I had say a device like the p2110, I know I that seems a little better, because it’s worth maybe $1000.
I guess my question is how do you handle with the fact you travel with a device that’s worth $2000?
I hear people take the tr2a to the woods with them.

I’m really very very extra careful with it! But the fact that it’s very small and light helps in handling it with care, heavier and bulkier notebook are harder to deal with.
I also bought a kensington lock, you never know

Your worried to travel to it. I’m worried to use my laptop full stop. I’ve got it sealed in a dust free environment. I then work on it using an Intel MMX suit (You know the funky colour ones from the adverts, not the boring plain non MMX suits), I picked it up off eBay for a bargin…
OK I’m just kidding but I do know what you mean. Life unfortantely is full of risks, I’d recommend you see if you can get it insured for some peace of mind.

I guess it is part of the deal depending on the type of travelling you do.
I work in post-conflict environments (mostly in Africa), so travelling with ALL your electronics is pretty much a requirement. You have to be sort of self-sufficient
Depending on the destination, I take my TR2AP3, cell phone, palm T3, synthetized handheld transceiver, BT headset, and sometimes even a satphone and GPS. Add chargers and other gadgets and you are looking at almost 5K of equipment.
Loses? Yes… things happen. I’ve lost a few things during an emergency evacuation a few years back in West Africa, but I guess it is part of the game. That’s what insurances are for, right? Things stolen? not so far… I hope it stays that way.
Regards,
Marcelo

i treat my TR2 like a baby the first week i got it (so as the other gadgets that i have). but then after that i thought what the hell, it’s just a computer, i’ve spent so much on it, so might as well use it to the fullest. i even take it with me when i’m doing some business in the toilet every morning. :D

The biggest risk when traveling with your TR is letting airport security handle it. I am polite and try to do all the hands on stuff myself (like put it in the plastic box before it goes into the x-ray machine). If they insist on handling it, there is not a lot you can do. Just request, in a nice way, that they be careful. I also put the sleeve I keep my TR in under the TR while it is in the plastic x-ray box (you should see what has been in those boxes before you got there). Otherwise, keep a sharp eye on your computer/bag. I still see people in airports just set down their computer bag and wander off to do who-knows-what.

Insurance.
I bought a Personal Articles Policy (PAP) from State Farm that gives me replacement coverage on the laptop with $0 deductible. The cost is about $25/year and it piggybacks on my homeowners policy.
My agent told me that the PAP even covers accidental breakage (although I have not yet read the fine print on the policy to confirm that).

Insuring laptops against theft when travelling is almost pointless when you look at the exclusions in the policy. It’s only covered if it’s in your possession. So if you leave it in your hotel room when you go to the lobby and it’s stolen -no cover. You leave it in the hotel safe -no cover, you have to claim off the hotel’s insurance. Can you imagine the difficulty in doing that overseas? Seems to me the only time it’s covered is if you are mugged whilst holding it.

On the subject of insurance,
I know Sony has an insurance policy, but as a student, after spending $ on the TR3A, I"m a little tight on cash, and it’s about 315 more than I could afford. Does anybody know of any other options for insurance? Please list.

Problem is that laptops are extremely stealable and fragile. That makes the premiums on covering them away from home very high. To cover my TR1 away from home DOUBLED my house contents insurance. And get this: I had to argue with them to get the (semi-hard) case covered in that! You might argue that it’s better value not to insure it if you are very careful with it. Since the theft insurance is virtually useless (see my previous post) the only thing you are insuring against is accidental damage. I can’t recommend anyone specifially. I think they’re all the same. Read the small print very carefully.

I bought a security lock which I can tie around some heavy immovable object and the other end can be connected to the lock slot of the laptop. This is one good way of preventing someone from walking away with your laptop incase for some reason youre not around. I work in the pc lab in my university and often have to go to attend to students difficulties so anyone can walk away with my laptop if I’m not around for a long time. Two of my roommates had their laptops stolen. One had left it in the book store’s book rack (as was reqd by the bookstore’s policies) and someone walked away with it. He had a hard time getting his money from them but in the end did get it. The 2nd one lost it through sheer stupidity of his. We both were working in the pc lab and he had left his entire laptop case some distance away from us. I told him plenty of times to get it from there and keep it with us…but he didnt listen and at the end of his shift when he went to pick it up, someone had stolen it…he never got ne thing from the univ for it. So, if u r hesitant to spend money on insurance like I am, get some lock for it..another one could be some alarm lock which would ring incase someone tried to sever the cable or walk away with it. targus is a good company which manufactures these things.

This is not true for any of the Personal Article Floaters I have ever purchased for expensive camera equipment, firearms, or laptops. These policies do not require that you be “mugged” for the coverage to kick in.
Perhaps the underwriting rules are different in the UK….?
Also, WRT to doubling your insurance and arguing with them to cover the hard-case, the going rate around here for this type of coverage is $1.00 to $1.75 per $100 of coverage. I tell State Farm the value of the laptop and ANY accessories I want covered and I get charged accordingly.

Are you sure your stuff is covered if it’s outside your home and out of your sight?
