Has anyone here had a chance to test Skype ? It’s a P2P based VoIP (Voice Over IP) application that lets you “call” other friends running the same software. The quality is phenomenal and it works easily from behind firewalls without and special configuration.
I just tried it with another Sony TR user (since we have the built-in microphones) and it simply rocks. There’s no noticeable lag and the sound quality is better than cell phones and some regular phones.
Skype is currently free with no known adware…yet. You can get your non-TR friends to use it too…they only need a microphone and the software. It’s a fairly small program, easy to use, and has good quality.
Nah, I’ve been using it for a while…but it’s the first time I used it with another TR user. It’s just fun…I just need to find a really good voice and video chat program. Skype is wonderful though…
Not sure if your TR would have came bundled with this software, it did in the UK – The Vaio Internet Telephone, it works great. The software turns your PC into a phone, enabling you to call anywhere in the World at a fraction of the cost of using a normal telephone line. I use it with a plantronics quality headset, it’s the about the same quality I would get from my landline, calling my neighbour! A registed up with a company called Callserve, it’s so cheap to call mobiles and abroad.
does anybody familiar with this?
it says to compatible with skype and other company
another version of this even has the call fowarding function
where you can forward your internet call to the regular phone.
i think it’s pretty neat.
Ye Skype rocks! I have been using it for a while now. Great rates as well if you wanna call the landline phones (SkypeOut) and I save on international calls too!
I have voice mail service with Skype and was thinking about adding SkypeIn service… you can get an actual number (you can pick US, French, Hong Hong or England phone numbers) and people can call you from their phone and as long as you run Skype or voice mail you won’t miss it (can’t wait till country wide wireless Internet service - I know I will keep dreaming for now). SkyIn is good if you have relatives let’s say in Hong Kong and if you got a phone number in HK they can call you locally! It also works on PocketPC handhelds.
I have a friend who called me using Skype from 20000 feet above flying Lufthansa (they have wireless Internet available on board like Japanese airline) - neat huh and all for free!
Skype is actually thinking of adding video soon, so we’ll see.
Skype me at “vaiofreak” - we should arrange a conference call for TR, S, X, T users!
You can guess my Skype name…hint hint, tifosiv122. I use it all the time for gaming…load up skype on one machine, play RB6 or Worms on the other, with my friends from home.

Since my daughter and my son went to college, Skype has been our ‘keep in touch tool’. TR’s built in microphone and speakers work just fine through a broad band internet connection.
I’ve been using Skype for months now and i have tested the beta versions of Skype in and Skype Voice mail. It is just great. In fact, Skype was one of the reasons I bought a TR. The TR with Skype, in my opinion is the perfect mobile solution.
I have been using, for a coulple of months now, Skype with a bluetooth headset. makes it even better. I foun a plugin that allows you to answer and make skype calls using thi bluetooth headset multi functional button. you should test it. It is ALMOST perfect.
Darn, it does not like my Sony PCGA-UVC11 on my VGN-S notebook. When testing it my picture comes up for a second and then it crashes horribly. The camera is fine in all other applications so I’ll just chalk it up to beta status.
Hmm…. I have not tested it on my UVC10, I am gonna try that and I also have an earlier JP version PCGA-VC2 VAIO cam, I’ll see if it works too. Both of them work just fine with other services though (MSN, Yahoo, etc.)
