The connector on compact flash and 1.8” drives appears to be the same as far as I have seen, I have found that I can get the 8Gb CF for under £100, and 8Gb would be enough for my mobile comuting - but would it give me any performance increase? Would it even work? At the very least it would get rid of the insane noise from the hdd.

Anybody got a compactflash they can pop in to test it?

Hmm if you get insane noise from your hdd, you could just upgrade to a newer one, the newest models are unaudible except for head movement.
Flash drives are faster check some reviews about the owner made UX with SSD or as they call it no spindle drive.

It is not neceserry to test it the UXes come with 1.8 drive or the SSD so thez must be compatible.

I get a samsung SDD as soon they appear on the shelves if takes too long might buy something and swap the drives.

Hey Mate, be careful whenever you attempt to swap your X505HDD with the SSD from UXs. That SSD comes with CE connector and will not fit with your X505 harness

don’t mean using the SSD devices, I mean using an actual compact flash card.  8.0Gb CF cards are available cheaply now, as little as £60-70 for a decent speed one.

As far as I know CF and the 1.8” in the Vaio x505 have the identical interface. 

A CF would mean very very fast seek times, which would benefit a machine with such a small amount of memory quite dramatically.

I have had my Vaio apart several times, but I do not have any compact flash cards at all to try this with.

Install the Vista Home Basic Upgrade. It can use flash memory with the readyboost feature. This works great since them memory cannot be upgraded.
