Just received my new TX790 (I currently have a TR2AP, which was the last notebook I bought). One of the available accessories, which I purchased, is a 512MB Expansion Memory Module (VGP-MM512L). A few questions:
1. Looking through this forum, I am learning that I could have purchased a much more economical memory upgrade at places like crucial.com and newegg. Why is the Sony version so expensive ($299)? Is there an advantage to using their proprietary hardware?
2. Do I even need this? When I open the memory access panel in the back, I see just one slot, and it’s already filled with the 1GB module that came with the unit. You can probably tell I’m no expert, but I’m thinking I don’t want to replace that with a 512MB module. What am I missing? If the only module you can replace is 1GB, why would Sony list a 512MB module as an accessory?
3. I’m thinking I should just return the module, but if some of you recommend extra memory, what should I get and where do I install it?
Thanks for your help!
