Does the PC card slot on the TR only work with Sony manufactured cards?

It’s a standard PCMCIA (PC Card) slot. You can stick in any 32-bit PCMCIA card from any manufacturer. Depending on the device, it may just simply work or you might need a manufacturer supplied driver.
