I do a lot of presentations over 1000 people per year; I bought the TR as a mobile presentation tool (I have since used it for many other things!) I still experience a choppy playback, which is more noticeable when projected on to a big screen. I upgraded the RAM to 512, buts is still not so good. Usable but still a little choppy.

I play mpegs through a lacie 180 gig firewire hard drive, which works great on my Toshiba with a 1 gig celeron processor and 512 of ram

Has anyone else any experience of choppy dvd or mpeg movie play back on their TR?

I presented a DVD I made last night and it was smooth and flawless. You may want to adjust your performance settings in the Power Panel software if you feel you’re not getting enough speed. You can change the setting from Adaptive to Performance. You really shouldn’t need to but it might help your situation.

I routinely play WMV, MPEG4, MPEG1, MPEG2, and even DV files directly from hard disk and it works fine. It could possibly be your external firewire drive. Products not using good Firewire bridge chips have problems streaming data. It’s known that products based on the Oxford Semi 911 or 922 chipsets are generally considered the best. Many other implementations have issues. This was definitely an issue with older products but I think the 180GB LaCie drive shouldn’t have this limitation. What application are you using to show the videos?

Using windows media player, or the dvd software that came with the TR Intervideo etc. Could the software be an issue?

It could be. I also use Windows Media Player…you might want to make sure all of the video acceleration features are turned on.

In terms of WinDVD for DVD, I use my other copy of WinDVD 5 (instead of the 4 that came with my system). In either case, both versions should use the acceleration of the built-in chipset so it should be ok.
