hi all x series owners, i used to use my old srx51p alot but gave it up when better laptops came out with built in disc drives. i was just wondering, i know how sleek and slim it is, but is it not sometimes annoying that the disc drive is external on the x505? cause thats how i felt with my srx

It really depends on how much you use optical discs. I went from a notebook that didn’t have one, and I swore I would never do it again, so I got the TR. I never used the drive, so I decided to sell it and get the X. Long story short, I think I’ve used the optical drive 3 times in almost 2 years. If I need to move data I do it via WiFi or if it’s too big, via thumbdrive or external HDD. If I need to load software, I throw a CD in another machine and network the drive.

If you are not sure how much you actually use the drive, try to stop yourself from using it for a month or two. If you can do it, then I’m sure you’ll like using an X.

Yep, I totally agree with Erik. I got two external DVD-RWs and I used it just a few times to back up some data. I do not see myself watching a DVD on my X505, I’d rather rip and shrink the movie on its hard drive. External HDD has been helpful though to load programs and for extra storgae, back up.

I use my external DVD burner on my X505 all the time .. to watch DVD’s while laying on my bed (I keep the burner on the headboard shelf, as I find little other use for it).

I install software networked to my other systems.

I back up to external hard disks.

Out and about with my X505, I see absolutely no use in having an optical drive with me.

I agree with the above posts. Most people complain about X505’s lack of an optical drive, yet I have no idea why anyone would go and buy the X505 if optical drive is crucial. I mean would anyone buy a Smart ForTwo if they have a family of four, and a dog to boot?
