Ok, my spelling is beyond terrible…call me a product of word processors. Anyway, it gets annoying opening Word every few minutes to check to see if a word I am using is spelled correctly, and my online spell check (a friend who majored in English) is not always online for me to IM her and ask her the spelling.

I’m looking for a program (spell checker, duh) that I guess runs in the system tray and I can pull it up at a moments notice, spell check a word or a sentence and shrink it out of the way when I’m done.

Anyone use something like this? I’d rather freeware, but at this point I’m getting desperate.

I always use Google for this task as it will correct your words for you.  But I guess it depends if you need it offline as well :?

It says it should correct small typos, so depending on how badly you mangle the word, might be able to help you out.

P.S. just realized, it looks like the widget hasn’t been updated and might not work with the newest version of Yahoo! Widgets, so your mileage may vary. If not, guess you could try one of the plethora of dictionary widgets they have there, good luck.

Most of the forums I belong to I have to copy and paste to MS Word to spell check. I really like the forums that have the spell check function available when you reply to a post.

Mighty Matt - yes, I use google every once in a while for that, but like you said I’d rather have something that lives on my computer in case im offline (heaven forbid).

SweetAL - I’m trying not to re-install Konfobulator as it seemed to be a bit of a hog, but for a last resort, I might use it. Thanks.

Low Bat - yes, but again, I am also looking for something offline which is why I wanted someting for my system tray. Thanks for the suggestion. BTW, in case you were wondering, this might be part of an update Groovy does in the next few weeks…we discussed adding an internal spell check.

I’m still open to more ideas for programs that live on my pc. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Searched Google and came up with (although I’m sure you’ve done this yourself):

http://www.dynawares.com/spell.htm - This uses the Word spell check module to check your highlighted text.  It says it’s free but there is also mention of a 30 day trial so don’t know if that relates to this product or their others :?

http://www.megspace.com/computers/tinyspell/ - This one checks everything you type and beeps if you mis-spell something.  Perhaps a way of learning to spell to stop the beeps
