My hdd seems like dying, it was loading and running real slow. 
I read some of the posts from this forum that the hdd is easily break down. 
Luckily, I have an 60gb ipod photo so I might as well switch the hdd. 
It was too late for me to make backups since I couldn’t really load up any programs. 
I need some of my files from the old 40gb but when I plug the ipod into the usb I could only see the restore partition. 
How could I make my old C and D drive back alive? 
I went to the disk management or something, it does show me those 2 partitions but it seems like it hasn’t been formatted yet and showing 100% free space. 
So what can I do now to be able to read the old C and D drive? 
(btw, I didn’t format and it also did not ask me to format the 40gb drive,  I just plug into the usb right after I put the old 40gb in the ipod.)

soda, no idea about what you are saying, but i just can’t follow stuff like this, but I want to put my 30gig 2g ipod hd into my Tr3, so how did you get the ipod apart, does it just pry apart?  thanks!

I’m not quite following your post, but I think you’re going to need to format your new hard drive, from the iPod, to be compatable with the PC first. It’s not going to ask you to format automatically. Then use your restore disks on it. Plug in your old drive thru USB and see what files you can pull off it.

I assume the iPod was set to mass storage mode before you tried this, but if it wasn’t…

Anyway, barring that, I’m pretty sure I know whats wrong, but first I want to clear this up: you switched HDs, the laptop works, but the you can’t see the old HD’s data through the iPod.

So if my understanding is correct, the problem is both of the partitions on the laptop’s old HD are NTFS formatted. (thats how they ship from Sony and its better for most things) The iPod, even in mass storage mode, cannot read NTFS; Mac OS itself has problems too; only Windows and Linux can access a NTFS partition. So I don’t think you can access the old HD’s files through you’re iPod. (no idea really, iPod linux might do the trick)

But there is hope ; you can buy an external 1.8in usb enclosure and that should let you access the hard drive. They can be had for less than 20usd.

I just wanna find out is there any other way I can access the other 2 partition (C: and D: drive) 
I just didn’t really wanna swap the hdd again
