Also, the stated battery life went down…what happened to 7 hours? It’s now 5.5 hours.
Of course, my own tests showed that 7 hours was pretty optimistic. I did however manage to squeeze out 6 hours of MP3 playing. I wonder why it’s lowered to 5.5 hours now. Ok….just checked. On the regular page it still claims 7 hours but when you click on the specification page it shows 5.5. Uh, can somebody call the QA and Content teams?
So, it seems that there are 4 models. TR3A, TR3AP1, TR3AP2, and TR3AP3. At least the price points are essentially the same.
The TR2AP3 and TR3AP2 are essentially identical except for the wireless chipset used. The TR3AP3 now gets the pretty Centrino sticker instead of the Pentium M sticker. So, if you already have a TR2AP3 then you have nothing to worry about with this new upgrade. I don’t think they new wireless chip is any better than the old one.
It seems like the new DVD drive is only DVD-RW/R. This sucks. For the $500 premium you’re paying, you’d expect at least a dual format drive. You can buy Sony’s own dual format desktop drives for around $100. Yes, it’s not portable. Even Sony’s external portable DVD-RW/+RW drive is a better deal for $599…at least you get two formats…
Ok…TR4….I await you…and you’d better have some good new stuff…and not just 802.11a/b/g (Intel’s next stated wireless chipset).
