Lately I’ve been craving for a new crazy Japanese gadget, lol. That’s how I always am. First it was a plain Sony Vaio tower, then it was the all-in-one PC (Vaio V-Series), then it was my Vaio TR3AP1. I have a new desktop replacement now, a shuttle custom built pc. So now I’m thinking about selling off my TR and getting one of those U-Series bad boys.. Is it worth getting one? I know it doesn’t do everything! But stuff like instant message on AIM, web browse, be a photo buddy for when im doing automotive photography (just take out memory stick and put in the U-Series), etc.. What programs have you U-Owners put on this machine.. Where else other than eBay can I find this, it’s becoming rarer and rarer on eBay now.. :(
Go to this site. http://www.greyhat.com/sonyu. Its one of the most comprehensive resources on the U series there is. It also tells you where you might find one. Ebay is your only chance to get one for cheap. I was in your shoes not too long ago. Trust me, this little thing is a wonder, it can do so much and i dont even miss using my S or TR since i got this. I mean it more than takes care of the things you mentioned. Yesterday i found my self streaming live tv off the net, watching a DIVX and copying some stuff off my zen. I could alt-tab through windows with ease, it feels much faster than my TR ( only difference is the dothan ).
well the main things i see in using this for is, walking around my house and just web browsing and instant messaging. it’ll also be my memory stick reader buddy for when im taking automotive photography. just throw in my memory stick and unload the pictures. i’ve just built a custom desktop, and my TR didnt perform stuff like photoshop CS2, golive CS, and a few other programs very well..
Is the 256mb Ram and the 512mb a noticable difference?
What programs have you guys been able to run on this thing?
Does this thing have a hardwire ethernet jack?
Has anyone ordered from Conics.net? Are the legit at all, i’m scared of buying high end technology at onlineshops that i never heard of.. hope it’s good news from them..
I use it al the time. Im going to start using this for telephony. BT headset with skypeout.
It handles google earth quite well. I havent played any games on it yet. Most programs that work on my S3XP work on here. Handles Microsoft GPS quite well.
[quote author=“rahulnirmal2000”]Holy crap, that U faq on Greyhat is amazing!!! Have they or anyone else made such a comprehensive one on the T series??
The U is a much more niche type of product, that’s why there needed to be such a list, I honestly don’t think many other notebooks need something like that.
It is a good source, and a lot of the downloads from my MAME host come from them.

It can do pretty much everything your TR can do and if you get the U750P or the U71(best verison) its faster then the TR. Only exception is lack of pcmcia card(can’t find any usb ones tell me if you find one) and it can’t hold 1-2G of ram like the TR can. The U is ahead of its time like when the TR came out and like the dreamcast(still have it and love it :D). So far the TR is slowly getting pushed down by the T and TX but still is decent for projects and some games. The U has very similar specs to the TR series from the TR1 to the U50 to the TR5 to the U750 or U71. The U is the best out there still and its 2 years old. Even the new ones coming out like the oragami ones its still nowhere near the power of the U until the orgami’s come out with vista and im 95% sure the U can handle it hands down. So im estimating that in 1-2 years a item will be tied with the U or slightly better. For some reason sony has been ahead of its time for a couple years now from the new blue ray drive from when they made there ultaportables which is still the leading today pretty much. I’m excitied myself and getting a U71 in about 7 months.
EDIT: There is something almost identical to the U but not as fast the Samsung Q1 2nd one to have windows XP i think. But the U is still ahead of the race by a hair sadly it looks that samsung will pull ahead eventually of 1.1 Dothan Pentium M since it has 30G and 512 ram like the U71 and only just needs to improve speed.
