Excellent review. Pics look great. May I ask what type of camera you used for the pictures.

Nice review. After hearing horror stories I quickly got a clear skin for the back and screen of my nano. The black casing I can deal with scratches a bit better because with a clear skin it changes the look and i’d rather have scratched then ugly.

I ordered a Vaja case for mine…can’t wait for it to show up.

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-F828 digital camera for nearly all of the shots. I also used my DSC-T1 camera but I didn’t like the shots overall especially since I had to take a lot of macro shots.

Nice review. There is one thing I’m not happy about with my nano: the lack of a remote. It was the Killer Feature(TM) on my iRiver and I’d like to be able to stick a remote on my jacket to change songs without having to go fishing in my pocket for the nano. I don’t know how all of those women walk around holding their iPods in their hands everywhere.

Erik: Doesn’t a case kind of defeat the purpose of the nano? With that thickness, you might as well go for a full-sized iPod, especially the new ones.

Great review.  I don’t yet own any iPods.  I’m still loyal to my ancient Archos Jukebox Recorder.  It’s a damn shame about the scratching issue as the Nano is very appealing otherwise.

Another slightly disturbing thing i’ve noticed is the battery wiring is soldered onto the mainboard… no plastic connector to allow replacement without a soldering iron.  IMO, this indicates a certain disposable attitude which is repulsive to me.

Depends on how you use the device. I want a remote for two reasons: First, I’m used to it. If I say to myself “Fuck, I don’t feel like listening to Echo Image right this minute,” I’m used to hitting the next button clipped to my jacket. Hell, I did it with my Clie for two years before the iRiver. I could have done it on a G4- iPod. I realize this is antithetical to Apple, but I’d rather decide for myself what accessories fit my lifestyle, not Steve Jobs. Second, I hate free-hanging cables on my person. Better to clip it and manage it than get it caught. If I don’t wear a jacket and still use the nano, I loop the cord at the right distance and clip it to my keyring. The remotes double as a cord clip. During the winter, I leave the remote on my winter jacket and since I use the short-cord MDR-EX71s, it’s easy for me to plug-and-go with minimal untangling.

Anal and persnickity, yes, but not frivolous.

And on entirely unrelated rant: Why the hell doesn’t Apple make black accessories like cables and docks to match their new black devices??? (or more importantly my decor)

I won’t know till it arrives…worse comes to worse I’ll ebay it. From the pics it doesn’t seem to add too much to it and I wanted a clip:

I said it in another thread, but maybe you didn’t see it, ebay has plenty of black USB to Dock port cables.

I missed the original. What I see right now on ebay there are mostly white cables bundled with black leather or silicone cases. Thanks, though.

I’m thinking I can just leave a cable on my windowsill for a few months and lacquer the deisel soot to the cable. Worked for the sill - and that doesn’t even need lacquer to be permanent!

I just checked ebay, they seem to be harder to find…maybe production issues. Here’s the one I got, he doesn’t seem to list them anymore…
