Eric, you were totally right when you said that for classes, even a VAIO TR is way too heavy.
See, I decided full time working had been enough for quite some time, so I switched to freelancer again and got immatriculated to one of the two big universities in my hometown, Munich.
Since I’m taking Informatics (Computer Science) and also because you get WiFi access at many places in Munich with your university account, I of course want to take my ‘baby’ with me.
With the TR in my bag, there’s significantly less room for books, notes and scripts. And while it’s a very light notebook, it still gets pretty heavy after walking around with it on the longer days. But with that I could still live.
The real problem is, as with every really big university, that “big” isn’t the right word to describe them. I rather have the impression that the most parts of the entire inner city of Munich is just University. That means buildings scattered everywhere.
Currently, most of my lectures take place in two different areas: One is a big complex of buildings, I sometimes still manage not to find any way out of it. The other one is the main building of the University, a very huge 500 years old thing. With many stairs. And the big building complex and the main building are far from being next to each other.
So, there are days where I have lectures in the big complex and immediately afterwards in the main building. We’re talking “lecture finishes at 3:00pm in the complex” and “lecture starts at 3:00pm in the main building”. cum tempore (which basically means that, unless explicitly stated otherwise with sine tempore, really everything starts 15 minutes late, don’t know if it’s the same everywhere in the world), so that means you have 15 minutes to get to that other place. Which is quite far away. And there are stairs involved. A lot of stairs.
Well, you get the idea, it’s pure running joy which certainly isn’t bad for informatics students. In fact, today, I didn’t even have my VAIO with me and my bag almost killed me.
So, I think it’s time for an X505. It won’t replace my TR5MP, for various reasons. First, I like my TR5MP. Second, nowadays, I wouldn’t get much money for it anyway, I guess. And third, the price for an X505 should have dropped, shouldn’t it?
I searched e-Bay, but the only thing I can find (in Germany) is that , which doesn’t tell me how expensive it will be (and I didn’t even check yet if it’s legit). Any idea?
Thank you. Yeah, the TR, as light as it seems, is just too much when you carry it all damn day.
What worries me about that auction:
I receive a lot of spam in my main address.
So feel free to contact me here : .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
to order this item.
Note : it is very important to reach me only by using this e-mail address , otherwise i am afraid that i am not able to give you an answer .
That’s usually what hacked accounts say because they don’t want you to e-mail the real account holder. Best way to check is use the ask a question button through ebay, that will send the seller an e-mail directly…see if they are real or not.
I sort of agree that trying to sell the TR now might not be worth it, and if you have the money for both, go for it. If you’re not to hung up on the CF, I think the solid black might be cheaper.
You’ll notice an instant difference in thickness and weight when you get it, it will be like your carrying nothing at all in that bag.
[quote author=“FrodoID”]But that guy absolutely wants to use Western Union or similar. Seriously, who bids on that? Or is that a common thing in the US?
It’s yet another scam tip-off. He wants a money transfer. (ie. no refund if something goes wrong)
Frodo,
Keep watching for X505 not only on ebay.de but on ebay.com as well. Most sellers are willing to ship it to Europe. Search for X505ZP, X505VP, X505P/CP/SP. It is definitely a neat notebook and a keeper!
Good luck!
If you really want a X505, I can sell mine to you. I have 2 computers and would like sell one and get some cash.
X505/CP: 1.1G CPU, Carbon fiber casing, different from the US Nickle model. I bought it from dynamism.com one year ago, but in perfect condition. English XP pro installed, with recovery CDs from Dynamism. Original box and all the documents.
And also I have a sony PCWA-C800S wireless a/b/g card, which I bought separately. 108Mbps super G model. And a slim external DVD-ROM (ilink, original from sony Japan, I remember the model is PCGA-DVD1, but I need to check). By the way, the external DVD-ROM is white color, I bought about two years ago, but rarely be used. It is just a DVD-ROM, not DVD-RW. Very slim, and stylish.
If you want, how much you would like to pay? You can pm me or email me.
Yea, most big city universities have the same problem of having a campus that’s way too big. At University of Toronto, classes end on the hour and starts on the 10 so we have 10 minutes to get from class to class, which is far from enough time. Most of the time I either run to my lectures or just copy lecture notes off someone else, and even 1 lb is a world of difference after a while.
Seems like most X505s still cost the same amount as it first came out, since it is a limited edition computer. Subnotebooks tend to depreciate at a slower rate in comparison to desktop replacements as well. Most cheap X505 on ebay are either fraud or used machines, it’s extremely hard to find a brand new one now…

Yeah, Rutgers is a huge school and you need to go from Campus to Campus (5 of them in one area) for some classes (third largest school in the country). Thankfully my lawschool requires much less walking (but much thicker books).
[quote author=“FrodoID”]First, Eric: thanks a lot. Indeed, looks bad.
jung: Hmm. Sorry, I can’t find any X505ZP on ebay.de?
But that guy absolutely wants to use Western Union or similar. Seriously, who bids on that? Or is that a common thing in the US?
Guess I still have to wait…
Why not consider one from Japan. I’ve been casually looking for myself but never seem to free up the cash for what would be a luxry item not a need. You can get both models pretty reliably all the time and they’re a lot cheaper. Couple of reliabel services around for buying for you. PM me if you want details of who I use.

SP with the briefcase, softcase, ilink DVD burner and heaps more.
Around $1600-1700 USD
the problem is, i guess, “nix-verstehen-japanese” that means e.g. no japanese understanding :?
@frodo: if you are still interested in a x505 source, serious and clean, and not afraid of handling with customs (i guess similar to austria) i can patch you through my x505 seller in tokyo, just pm me
Now, I have to check my finances and see how I can afford an X505. I guess that in the end it’ll end up with me buying an X505, but I don’t know where. I’ll come back to you!
besides you should also consider the question if you could live with 20gig of hdd space ... me personally, cant await the the release or where bigger hdds are available

I think there’s a 30gig single platter internal hard drive, and the 40gb is suppose to be released soon. (Or should have already been released) Personally the hard drive space is fine for school work, long as you have atleast 1 other main computer at home.

The 40gb hd has two platters, which has been released for a while. I bought one about half a year ago, but only use it as an external hard disk with a 1.8” external box.
