just a question that’s been puzzling me for a while and I thought since there are so many ‘geeks’ here - no offence, hehe.

I work between film, new media and standard sort of web jobs. I recently joined the contract (consultant) world. Meaning I get an agent and then work for a month or two here and there (shortest gig 2 weeks so far). It’s pretty good and there’s a lot of work around at the moment so I’m never out of work for long and each job is like a different project so I never reall get bored. But I don’t really know what I shoudl be charging. It seems I’ve been on $35 an hour (AU) for a long time. Recently at my current gig one of the managers came up and was interested in getting me for a month for her section and she asked what my rate was “be about $70 and hour huh?” she said. Well Man was I shocked - so was she when she heard it was so cheap. I also saw that my agency was adding their commision to the top of my hourly rate and so chargin the firm $75 and hour.

Any thoughts? The kind of work i’m talking about is web development and especially writing for the web, HTML, Flash design, web editing, etc.

It may also be a bit different between countries.

we get about 7000 nrs here, about 10 USD - A WEEK! seriously, yes, you are right, it is country dependant, but for the web/film editing 75$ an hour sounds like a global minimum. Sometime I find a cash-flush INGO here, and I always charge that.

ps. Anyone out there who is doing a lot of this kind of work, Nepal is an incredible bargain on outsourced offshore labor rates, and the kids here are really professional (better than India inmho). So if you need any type of digital work for your large project (CAD, OCR, digitizing, web programming, etc.) let me know!!!
