I’m buying TX651 but I’m a bit confused about memory and possible upgrade.
Does TX series use standard SO-DIMM DDR2 modules ?

Furthermore, I’m confused about possible upgrades. Here what Sony says in specification sheets:

TX650/651:  512MB PC-3200 400MHz DDR2 (512 MB x 1) (Expandable to 1GB)

TX670:  1GB PC2-3200 400MHz DDR2 (512 MB x 1/on-board) + (512MBx1) (Expandable to 1.5GB)

TX690:  1.5GB PC2-3200 400MHz DDR2 (512 MB x 1/on-board) + (1GBx1)

It seems that 650/651 model doesn’t have built in memory (like 670 and 690 have) and it can only be memory fitted with just one slot. True or false ? Does this mean that I cannot expand memory to 1.5 GB if I buy TX651 ?

It seems to me that TX651 doesn’t have wireless Wide Area Network integrated and TX650 have.

I’ve read in couple of articles that Sony will first release TX model without WAN and mid-october WAN model will be out.

And I’ve downloaded .pdf files from both 650 and 651.

The only two differences are:

- In 651 .pdf document there isnt any word about WAN;

- In 650 .pdf document says “Memory
512MB PC2-3200 400MHz DDR2 (512MB x 1)
(Expandable to 1.5GB)”  and in 651 says “Memory
512MB PC2-3200 400MHz DDR2 (512MB x 1)
(Expandable to 1GB)”.

I just upgraded the memory in my TX651 to 1.5 GB using a 1GB Kingston PC2 3200 DDR2 CL3 200 pin ram chip available from NewEgg for under 100$ shipped UPS three day for 5$.  That should answer the questions regarding upgradablility limitations on the TX651.  Works perfectly and makes it quite zippy after getting used to the 512MB with the Intel 915GM chipset which eats ram for its 128MB graphics ship.  They really should not sell this notebook with only 512MB RAM.  Then again, Sony would charge 400.00 more for the 1GB upgrade that they rebrand to Sony.  The TX is sooooo much easier to upgrade the memory than the T.  One screw and 20 seconds later reboot.  No keyboard removal etc… as on the T.

When I get my TX I’m definately upgrading with this.

I just bought my 1GB module from the above link at NewEgg.com and it’s an exact match of what is in there currently from factory.  I have not heard of going with the higher memory.

So far the 3200 RAM works perfectly in my new TX610!  Under $100 shipped is not bad compared to Sony’s price to upgrade.

I added the factory recommended RAM to my TX651.  One GB, piece of cake, $115 delivered.
