Using the autorun trick, you can easily customize the devices you connect to your Windows XP system so that they’re more descriptive than Removeable Device in your Windows Explorer. So, for example you can have something like the following:

Yes, those devices are all actually connected simultaneously. I would have connected more devices if I had more devices and if I had more USB ports. I simply ran out of ports! (VAIO S + Port Replicator)... :shock:

Device list:

VAIO Pocket - Nice and clean. No variations.

Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) - including two black versions, one horizontal and diagonal.

iPod Nano - including both black and white versions.

Sony Network Walkman NW-E/Axxx Series - only the emerald/green version for now.

Sony Hi-MD MZ-RH10 Minidisc Player - only the silver version currently.

Simply download and unzip into the root directory of your corresponding device. You can use any text editor to edit the autorun.inf file to change the labels to your liking or to use an alternative set of icons.

It should unpack files in the following manner:

\autorun.inf
\ICON\name_of_device.ico

In some cases there are more than one icon set if i have color variations. All icon sets have 16x16, 24x24, 32x32, 48x48, 64x64, 96x96, and 128x128 sizes so it should look pretty good on most systems.

A couple of places. DeviantArt is great or another easy way is to use a press photo, screw around with it in photoshop until it’s got a transparent background and is a 128x128 PNG and use something like AveIconifier to turn it into a proper .ico file.

I made all of the ones above. With the exception of the iPod nano, I sourced the images myself from press images or my own photos. I used a combination of Photoshop + Stardock’s Icon Developer to do all the proper sizing and retouching. I found that resampling images to some of the smaller icons lost a lot of detail so they required some manual tweaking.

Ok so I started at 11pm, when Drachen gave me some points in the right direction…now is 3:48am and I am finally done. For the life of me I could not get both iPods to show up in my computer at the same time.

Here’s what I came up with:

Anyways, isn’t it cool? It totally makes it easier to interact with your devices when you can visually see them right away. I hated seeing 3-5 Removeable Drives in my Explorer.

I have about 4TB in my systems in my house…not counting laptops. My desktop has about 1.5 TB and the swappable drives are 400 GB each disc, 2 active at one time. Believe it or not, I don’t have all that much free space left. Oh, and about 7 or so GB flash

Ok, well I lived like that for at least 2 years…maybe more. It’s kind of annoying…but fun because nobody knows where anything is on my system without a search. Oh, and I am the King of not naming my folders…I have New Folder 1-XXX, seriously.

And of course, my old desktop:

I am trying to recover though…this is the second step. I’ve redone my desktop…
I’ve now organized my My Computer.

Just because I hate being on topic, here’s another tip for those of us with P900s or P910s. In order to change the desktop icon of the “My P900” icon, download a new icon file ( these rock!) and save the icon you want somewhere on your hard drive (note, you will want to put it in this location permantenly, so the desktop is a bad choice).

Next open up notepad and put the following in:

Note: change the last line to the exact path of the icon and double your backslashes!

The change should happen immediately. If not, just click the desktop and hit the F5 key.
