iPod nano has officially joined the family…

Question for you Ipod owners….

I heard that by default an IPOD can only sync with 1 and only 1 computer. 

Is that true?  I travel alot, so I like being able to download podcasts (from whatever computer I am on) and drag them over to my standard MP3 player.

Is that possible with an IPOD? 

I saw the Nano in the Apple store ... great engineering!!

I’m using two ipods right now and it works fine. When you connect it for the first time you ‘name’ your ipod…so I have Erik’s iPod and Erik’s iPod Nano. They have seperate playlists and songs…and the Nano has pictures as well.

1 IPOD with mulitple computers.

Like if I was at home and downloaded content from my desktop, but then went on a business trip and ran out of music ... could I download new content on my work laptop and sync it over to the Nano?

Yeah I don’t think thats possible because you can put music onto the ipod (via itunes) but it won’t let you take it off…I think you can use a third party program to do what you want.

I just tried my new iPod nano with two different computers.Both systems were using iTunes 5.0 and both let me dump songs onto the nano without any fuss.

So, i guess it’s possible.

but Comp. A doesn’t get song B and Comp B doesn’t get song A….right?

hey groov, how did you get the icon for your rh to show up like that? mine just shows up as a portable hd

It’s the “autorun” trick.

Basically, create an autorun.inf file on your device. It’s basically a text file with an .inf extension. Inside the file should be:

[autorun]
icon=my_icon_file.ico
label=My Cool Device Name

I believe the icon parameter will take a BMP file too but it’s best to make your own ICO files with multiple sizes so it looks good in different resolutions. I made 16x16, 24x24, 32x32, 48x48, 64x64, 96x96, and 128x128 sizes just in case. There is a limit for the length of the label but I’m not sure what it is yet.

I’ll make a black iPod nano icon to go along with the white one and post it here just in case you guys want to save some time. I’ll also upload the MZ-RH10 and NW-E507 ones too just in case anyone else wants them.

Ok, I’ve uploaded the iPod nano files here . Simply unzip the files (with included directory) directly onto your iPod nano. You’ll want to use a text editor to edit the autorun.inf file to change some of the settings. To uncomment simply remove the semi-colon. Enjoy. Sony ones coming soon…

But I think I’m going to wait until they come out with a larger-capacity version. This comes down to ... what ... 3? 4? ... ipods released this year? iPod Photo, iPod 6Gb mini (IIgen mini), iPod (Vgen, color screen), and now iPod Nano?

Primarily, I used a combination of Photoshop CS (or Illustrator CS occasionally) and Icon Developer . Icon Developer can automatically make all the sizes for you but I find that it only does an ok job at that. Of course, it makes sense that stuff gets distorted when you’re working with bitmaps. So I end up using Photoshop CS to make all the sizes I want to ensure that they look good.
