Hi guys,
I’m using a X505(obviously) CP version and I’ve always been wondering how hot (or cool) I should keep my CPU and HD at. When I’m doing less intensive task such as browsing the web or typing it’s generally 45 to 50 degrees Celcius for both the CPU and the HD, but when I head into intensive tasks such as multi-tasking, watching a video or gaming, it gets into 50 to 60 quite easily. I’m wondering what temperature I should keep it at to ensure my laptop lasts for years to come, and what are the temperatures you guys get on your X505. I’m currently using Centrino Hardware Control 1.9 Beta to measure my CPU temperature.
And lastly if my computer is running way too hot (cause I read somewhere anything above 55 degrees celcius is starting to push the limit), any advice on how much I should turn down the CPU to get it to run cooler?
[quote author=“Drachen”]IIRC, Pentium-Ms can run properly at temps up to 100 C. 60 C won’t do much for your lap, but it should be ok for your CPU.
Yes they can, but higher temp exponentially reduces the life span of the chip. If I want to run the laptop for years to come, it’d be in the best of my interest to not keep it at 90 degrees or what not. I was just wondering what’s a good temp that should not reduce the life span of my laptop.
i think what drachen is trying to say is.. you should stop worrying about it. as the system’s design limitations are well within the norms.
what i’d say is: stop worrying about, there’s simply not enough data to suggest that sony engineer’s meticulous design will fry your cpu before you get your ROI during the entire span of sony ownership…

Engineers have been known to do some really irrational things…

What do you want us to say? Your laptop has CPU cancer and will be dead in the next 6 months to a year and should be signed up for grief counselling? From being on this forum for 2 years and seeing all the complaints with similar hardware, the hard drive, battery and eraser-thingy are much more likely to die before your CPU does. Don’t be so paranoid.
Boot your X, down a beer and compute away. It’s what you bought your machine for isn’t it?

Yea, sorry if I sounded paranoid. :? It’s hard to find a X505 anymore and I love this machine, that’s why I’m abit concerned about it. If it was a T series then hell with it, I won’t care even if it dies in 3 months. But anyways thanks. (I think)
I think the entire point of what’s being said is that it doesn’t really need to last forever; in a few years your X505 will be slow compared to faster, more modern machines. So it’s not like choosing a wife!
I’m sure that there will always be a newer, cooler laptop then. When I had my little Acer about 6 years ago, I thought it was the greatest thing in the world. Then I got a Dell latitude and loved it. Then came the TR, which left me wondering how I ever got along without it. And now I see the T series, which is also as nice, if not nicer, because it’s more powerful than my current TR.
So you don’t need to worry about it, just think of a bigger picture and enjoy your beauty instead of worrying about it.

Exactly. Thank you.

Well I didn’t choose the X505 for speed, it is by no means the fastest (or even close to one of the fastest) laptop on the market, it’s meant for basic word processing. So I’m not worried in that sense, I guess all I really care about is the deisgn/compact-ess of a machine so that I can carry it every day.I guess there will most likely be one even thinner(?) and lighter in a few years time. So until then, I’ll take the advice and enjoy while it lasts. :D
