Has anyone seriously tested Vista yet? I am considering setting up a machine, but the catch is, due to semi-stiff requirements, it would be my ‘desktop’ AKA my school machine. Mostly use to run MS Office and IE and OE.
I am formatting and re-installing tonight, so it would litterally be now or not for 6 months…opinions?
I’m planning on installing it on a test machine just to get more familiar with it. I’ll have my own report once I get it all set up. I’m still trying to figure out what kind of Frankenstein system I want to build to run it.
I really hope they completely overhaul the Glass interface. I’m pretty sure they will but in its current form, it really doesn’t look very polished.
Well, i’ve installed it. Everything so far works great, just a tad bit slow. I’m using my old 2.8 Ghz HT P-4 w 1 GB RAM and a 7,200 RPM 8 MB 160 GB HDD, 9800 PRO.
I figure I’ll use it for 2 days before deciding if I want to keep it or stick with XP until the next release.

Nice…haha…“old”. That’s actually a pretty decently equipped system for most things. It will be interesting to see how well it runs. It seems like it loaded up Aero Glass too.
So how does it feel? Even though the interface is mostly the same does it feel different in terms of smoothness since your GPU is handling UI stuff?
I’m out of town and will hopefully get to install it on a test machine when I get home. Mine will be even more modest though.
P4 2.4GHz (no HT)
1GB of RAM
80GB 7200 RPM 8MB cache HDD
Radeon 9800 128MB
Wow…it’s basically 1 year away…I can’t wait! XP has been good to me but it’s time to move on.

I can’t stand the new IE…I need to get used to tabbed browsing. Of course most people who use Firefox, etc, will love it.
The start menu is strange…my programs opens on the start bar side…
My videocard is a 9800 PRO…and the whole system is chugging along a bit slow.
And, its a big buggy…right click sometimes doesn’t work…drag and drop won’t drop…highlighted things won’t de-highlight…etc. But, I can sort of live with it.
Oh, yeah and PowerToys Image Resizer…something I can’t live without, refuses to install. And a search of the help reveals it will be built into Vista, yet hasn’t been implimented.
Worth a try…not sure if I can use this as my main system…but I’m trying.
Yeah, usually Beta 1s from Microsoft aren’t very usable. Beta 2s and RCs tend to be a lot better. Of course, any IT person knows that SP2 for any new MS OS is the real version. The exception to this rule was Windows NT 4 where the odd-numbered SPs were far better than the even-numbered SPs. Well, SP6 was mostly ok since SP5 fixed most of the problems.
If anything, it’s good to see what they’ve been working on. I expect the final product will be very different than the final shipping product.

Ok, I can’t get Office to install…this is an issue. I keep getting a 1304 error, meaning bad media, but I tried a DVD and a CD based Office install. Even tried HDD install…nope, same error. I am doing research, if I can’t get this to install…it’s a deal breaker.
So u really can only get this if ur an IT pro?? :? .... It doesnt seem all that amazing… but it would be interesting to check out.
IMO, with a GUI like that it looks like a shitty-made theme u’d get from StyleXP or sumthing… but w/e…

I’m not into customizing my desktops beyond wallpapers…I’m sure most of this stuff you can do with installed programs. Windows pop-up and close out in a similar fashion…very cool looking. Buttons light up, status bars have life to them.
Couldn’t install office 03…office xp, office 2000…I got Word ‘97 to install just enough to be usable.
I got all my drivers working perfectly, Nero works, DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, AVG, and Microsoft Anti-Spyware.
I could not get Palm desktop to install…another deal breaker. Its 4:40am, and I’m getting a bit tired of computers today. Tomorrow, XP and saying goodbye to Vista…it’s just not compatable enough right now for me.
I must say, I can’t wait for this as a final release (SPx)
[quote author=“Joe”]is there any point installing this beta1 on my tr5mp? or would it not run/be very slow etc?
There is no point unless you run your TR5MP as a test system. All of the mobile optimizations are missing from the OS and won’t be present until Beta 2.

I realise the power optimisation features etc arent present, but I was just curious to know if the tr5 is actually powerful enough to run the new OS? Or would I need to invest in a new laptop when the OS is officially released, if I wish to run it?
