From what I can tell you can’t set a password on a shared folder with Windows XP home edition. I need to have folders shared on my network but need some security. Does anybody know how to do this, either with XP or with an app?

I guess by XP Home, they figure that every on at “Home” is safe enough to share stuff with, so they left the password feature out…

Been wondering about this myself for a while, I would also like to see if there are any solutions for us XP Home users…

You could try naming shares with a trailing $ character so that the share is hidden when browsing.

just boot your computer on safe mode ( f8 ) and you’ll see most of xp pro security settings.

XP Home apparently uses the Guest account for remote users. You could try assigning the Guest account a password. Try typing this into the command line: net user Guest password. Unfortunately I don’t have any XP Home boxes floating around to test with. :?
