I have been used to the wonderful screen of the A series for quite some time. I just bought a T2XP (T250P) and was expecting the same type as it said xbrite.

On my A series (17”) the white is just plain clear white whereas on the T series the white is speckly throughout, almost as if it is the screen glass that is somehow not fine/clear enough.

It is very annoying as I have been spoilt and I cannot see text that well when I set it to ClearType whereas on the A series even though the screen is bigger, the icons and fonts are the same size and crystal clear throughout.

Does anyone else notice this? Is white really white or is it a speckly white?

How about the TR5MP models?

Yeah, compared to the A series the T’s display seems to have a certain “granularity” to it.  I don’t mind it all that much, but I can see how it can be annoying to some.

Seems like they have taken a step backwards don’t you think? Even my old C1MHP is clearer! why oh why…huh?

I am interested to see if anyone has noticed this on a TR5MP model..

When I was at the sonystore in london ontario awhile ago, i noticed the same thing comparing the A, TR and T. The T had just been released in Canada.

the guy at the sony store said the screen was better on the A because of the ErgoBrightâ„¢ Technology. Not sure if he was giving me a line though or if it was the truth. he was pushing hard for a sell - commission does that - it was like he was trying to get the commission any way he could. he tried to convince me the T series had giga pocket software (which it didn’t).

anyways maybe he was telling me the truth about the Ergobright. Maybe that’s why the A is clearer but not so clear on the T and TR cause the A has it, but the t and tr doesn’t.

One other thing to note is that the A series has two lamps inside as opposed to the single lamp inside the T and TR series notebooks. This is necessary to illuminate the larger screen. As a result, the A’s screen will tend to be brighter overall and have slightly better coverage.

The A models also have the ErgoBright feature also found on the desktop LCD monitors. Basically, it senses the ambient light and adjusts the brightness of the display automatically. Of course, you can override these settings if you want.

I wonder if your granularity is caused by cleartype (control panel / clear type tuning).  What happens if you disable cleartype?

No it is definitely not a Cleartype issue.  My guess is it has something to do with the T’s light guide.  Maybe its slightly frosted or something.
