Well I devided to go see the H2G2 (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy for those of you who don’t reconize the abbriveation) movie and thought I’d let you guys know how it was (its not like anybody cares what I say)...
First of all I would like to portray my dissapointment in the people of La Crosse, WI who went to see this movie… of everybody there only three (including myself) actually brought a towel! Thats just sad really since a towel is the most useful thing a hitchhiker can have on them.
Anyhow onto the movie. The movie itself was not true to the books in anyway, this upset a lot of fans, fans who didn’t realize that Douglas Adams never wanted any two versions of H2G2 to be the same or even very similar. So the fact that the movie didn’t follow the books very closely was actually a good thing (afterall a lot of the screenplay was written by the late Douglas Adams).
The movie itself was pretty **** funny I must say. The humor was more situational then most movies (so the jokes generally aren’t so much as trying to be funny as they are just funny because of the situation the characters are in or the way things are said, which honestly is a good thing as I don’t find humor in things trying to be funny).
The actors that were hired to play the characters did a great job. The guy who played Zaphod (both of him) was exceptionally awesome (the guy really did a nice job at displaying Zaphod’s fame and fortune additude). Marvin was probably the best comedy in the movie, as he was in the books.
The story was done a little too quickly though. They seem to move the characters between planets and story sections very quickly and forget to tie up a lot of loose ends. Which isn’t suprising but the whole purpose behind some things (such as a towel) is never explained which will kind of confuse anybody who has watched the movie but never read the books, watched the old show, or listened to the radio show. This was probably don’t in the interest of saying time since there is only so long you can make a movie, but I believe they should have explained a few things better and finnished the main story arc (which they seem to just drop towards the end).
I will make one comment on a line said in the movie…
*SLIGHT SPOILER*
At the end everybody desides to head for the restaurant at the end of the universe and while they are going there Marvine makes a remark that they restaurant is at the other end of the universe. I don’t think the directors really got the meaning behind the restaurant being at the END as in omega of the universe.
*THE SPOILER’S END*
Overall I will say I liked the movie a lot and really think that fans of any other H2G2 series will enjoy this movie so long as you go in remembering that the movie is suppose to be different from the books (most people have complained that the movie didn’t follow the books at all, which really was never the idea behind the movie). Also if you are going to see it remember to bring a towel!
