Still not sure on TR1 or TR2 (not getting TR3 as I live in UK) now I do quite a lot of video editing and photoshop stuff, and web design aswell I was wondering what kind of performance I’d expect to get from this little machine? 900 and 1ghz centrinos are prolly enough but how does the display look on an external monitor, whats the max resolution u can get out of it? does it support 32bit colour?
The TR can push a monitor to 1600x1200 at 32bit color. Personally, I’ve only tried a 19” Sony Trinitron monitor at up to 1280x1024. It worked pretty well and was surprisingly crisp.
how much ‘Bloat’ has sony installed on the machine, i.e. quoted 30/40gigs for the tr1/tr2, how much is free on opening the box?
There is a fair amount of applications installed and some of it is useful but it will depend on the kind of programs that you used. I did end up uninstalling a decent amount of their apps.
Is there a docking station for this model?
There is no docking station for this notebook. If you really need legacy ports then Kensington makes a generic port replicator that plugs into the USB port.
Battery life is a big issue as I do 5 hour train journeys quite frequently, does the extended battery really last 10 hours?? I didn’t think any laptop lasted that long, also is that 10 hours without using anything and screen off?
The extended battery can actually last up to 10 hours but that would be with the screen nearly off and the system only playing MP3s. In terms of actual usage I have worked on mine nearly 7.5 hours (with about >5% life left) with the wireless on. I kept the screen brightness between 4-6 (50-75%) depending on what I was doing. I was surfing the net, instant messaging, doing some development work and checking e-mail for most of the day.
