Well its no surprise but the next capacity bump in memory stick duo is now available for preorder at sonystyle USA . At $449, its slightly more than two MSX-M1GN sticks, which have dropped from $219 to $199. Looks like Sony is hoping for PSP to synergistically boost memory stick sales as well. (About time, since I felt that the PS2 should have been using memory stick media.)
Nice, I like how it’s basically the price of two PSPs!
At least they have 2GB capacity. That would go well with a PSP if you wanted to carry some video clips and music with you. You’d just better not lose it otherwise you would be very sad.

Yeah just a bit Out of the box, the PSP can’t do much besides play games. A nice fat 2Gb memory stick can make it much more capable in the way of a MP3 or portable media player. We’ll probably see a Sandisk 2Gb stick soon, since MS pro technology was developed jointly between Sony and Sandisk, iirc.
I wonder how long it will be until someone hollows the UMD out and hacks one of those 1” Cornice drives into the back of the PSP by feeding into the memory stick port with a ribbon cable.
Ye, I think Sandisk already sells 2 Gig Duo. It is so funny that at the moment 2 Gig stick sounds like a “fat” stick and just in a year or two there will be some MS packing some 10 Gigs or more and will be able to stream HD content. Theoretically MS supports up to 32 Gigs.
I hope Sony will not have to ditch the products that support MS Pro now and come up with another stick that will not be compatible with current Sony products.

I’m rather happy to see that Sony is actually using some of its memory stick tech in the PSP. It’s been a long-running discussion among my friends that the long, unhappy history of the MS would be very different if Sony had put MS slots in the PS2 for save games. As it is, it’s nice that you can use the same stick in your PSP, P910, Vaio and Wega.

I have that same long argument with my friends. Sony completely dropped the ball on Memory Stick market penetration using the PS2. Again, it was probably internal group fighting that led to many of Sony’s stupid ideas in the recent past.
Now, Sony just has to make the MS Duo work nicely among the varying devices….i.e. allow a person to view photos directly from a MS Duo (straight out of the camera). I’m sure it’s a firmware thing that can be fixed but it’s still boneheaded how it’s setup now.

That one really mystifies me. Even my Clie and my P900 followed the standard DCIM directory structure. Maybe the PSP can’t handle large images all that well…

I think they ditched MS for the PS2 in favor of backwards compatability for the PS1…now how many of us still play PS1 games on our PS2? Had they not done that, people would have bitched that they couldn’t use their old saves on their new system.

True. But sony is used to screwing us over. It would only have been temporary anger anyways since they would end up following Sony anyways and buying MS. They could have come up with an adapter (or multiple slots).

I think part of the reason they chose not to use MS natively and not to develop adapters was concern over use of the MS in cheating and piracy exploits. Indeed nowadays the memory card is used in several PS2 exploits.
As a matter of fact I do play PS1 games on my PS2. Some people believe the PS1’s RPG library is better than the PS2, myself included.
