I just got my x505 on ebay and there’s absolutely nothing in it. The dude who sold it to me wiped all the programs out and I’m desperately needing at least Microsoft Word.
Is there any way to install software WITHOUT buying the CD-DVD rom??? If so, what can I do?
OMG okay I got it. I can use the iLink but the thing is, the dude who sold it to me didn’t give it to me!! Crap! Where can I buy one? Will any Best Buy or CompUSA carry it? Or will I have to buy it online from Sony?
Yep any electronics store should have an iLink/firewire cable, but you need a external CD/DVD drive that supports that connectivity. I believe USB is also a viable option on the X505.
FYI, iLink is simply a 4-pin IEEE1394 “Firewire” cable. That should help you find one at your local electronics store. There are two types of cables. 4-pin and 6-pin. The 6-pin kind is noticeably bigger and it allows power to your device whereas 4-pin is data only.
One last thing, if you have two computers that have “Firewire” then you can simply connect the two of them together and they will be networked (assuming both are running Windows XP). You can then transfer files between the two and/or map shared drives.
don’y have an external drive. And I really don’t want to spend $500 on one.
You do not have to spend $500, you can always pick one up on Ebay, I saw PCGA-DDRW2 for $170, or you could go to any electronics store and pick one up for less than that, most like a USB drive.
Which X505 model you got? Was a nice deal?
you can find some good deals on ebay. I bought my PCGA-DVD1 only $45 plus $5 shipping. After you finished software installation, the CD-ROM is useless, at least for me. I use network installation a lot.
By the way, you can ask your friends to see if anyone have a USB external CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. A lot of people who owns a subnotebook have external CD-ROM too. When I first received my X505, I borrowed a USB external CD-ROM (very old one from IBM, only 4X), and finished office and other softwares installation with it. Just keep in mind, any external CD-ROM, DVD-ROM should work fine. I do not think buy a cheap USB extenal CD-ROM or borrow one from your friends is a big problem. Or, you can go to microcenter or bestbuy and buy a new one, after you complete installation, just return it and get full refund. I heard people do this sometimes.
X505 can only boot from ilink devices, but it accept all USB external devices.
I got the SP version. It was a couple months used but I’m okay with that. I got it for $2500. He for it for $4000 on Dynamism but I’m sure it’s much less than that.
I’m actually somewhat regreting getting it. I think if someone wanted to buy it from me right now I’d sell it. It’s a disadvantage when you’re completely computer illiterate like myself.
What exactly is a network install anyway? You see what I mean by VERY computer illterate? hahaha

Honestly, the easiest way for you is to buy the restore DVDs and bring it to CompUSA or something and pay then $X to restore it, or buy an external drive.
Where do you live? Maybe someone can meet up with you and bring their drive. Restoring takes about an hour or so.
If you want to send me your laptop, I have the restore DVDs, I can restore it and send it back. Just an option if you want.

I’m in Los Angeles, in Westwood to be exact.
are the recovery CDs the same as restore CDs
At this point, I’m broke as a joke. I don’t have money for anything. I might even have to borrow some money for an ethernet card. That fool really got me. I can’t believe I don’t even have the ethernet card OR firewire cable that were included. Damn him to HELL!

Hey Erik, can the X505 boot off non-Sony branded Firewire or USB2 external optical drives? Oh…i totally forgot, can the X505 boot off the Sony DVDirect? If so, then I can help!
