true, but also because they didn’t want to run the risk of people being surprised with any vibrations in the psp and accidently dropping it.

Good point.. we don’t want another vibrating things in our pocket..  cellphone is enough..  :D

also, i think that it’s extremely likely that sony will settle this matter out of court. there’s no way that they’ll pull ps2s and gran turismo off the shelf, let alone have this sidetrack their plans for the ps3.

WHy not just forget about the PS2 and shift everything in their gaming division to the production of the PS3?  Who cares about the PS2 when we can have the PS3 :twisted: ... plus there are plenty of PS2’s out there in business inventories to keep ppl happy til the PS3 is out.

Technically they could be forced to pull the PS2 off the shelves. Sort of like DVD-X-Copy where once the stores were informed, they pulled the title off the shelf and sent it back to 3-2-1.

The only issue with settling is its a bit too late IMO as MS owns 10% of the company suing…they might try to use their weight to swing a stalemate.

It doesn’t exactly look good for a company (SCEA in this case) if their bread and butter product is pulled from the market.  PS3 won’t go retail until 2006, and its likely it won’t be discontinued after PS3 launches anyways (a la PSone).  I’m guessing the haptics technology patent will affect the PS3 as well; I mean it would be a step backwards if it didnt have force feedback.

Well i was saying why couldn’t they push the PS3 release date forward to maybe Q4 of 2005. That way the discontinuance of the PS2 wouldn’t be too big a deal becuase video game makers could shift to making PS3 games and pretty much not lose money since PS3 games would be getting them money pretty soon as well as the PS2 games for those people who already have a PS2.

And as for the haptics… how are Nintendo, Microsoft, and every third-party manufacturer of vibrating gaming “things” not getting busted… Exactly how can Sony be nailed for using a vibrating technology and others can’t? Where is the line drawn that defines other force feedback NOT haptics?

The US Patent Office. Microsoft *did* get busted. They settled with Immersion, paid $20 million and took a 9% equity stake in Immersion according to the Forbes article.

It seems like Sony made it better.. that haptic technology.. it’s getting so popular now.. Hmm maybe I’ll hear this on my local news channel at 10pm tonight while I play WC3 battleships.. anyone plays battle ships?  :D
