Other than keeping XP’s character map running all the time, has anyone found a quick way or a bit of freeware that will allow the £ symbol to be easily used in any program?
TIA,
Tom

Have you considered setting the keyboard to english uk? We did successfully with a wireless keyboard we bought in the US, we then relabelled the few keys that needed it.

Holding Alt+Fn and then typing MJOL works too. :D

Changing the keyboard locale isn’t really an option as it will shift all of the keys to the right and I don’t really have a way to re-label the TR keys.
I like the sound of Drachen’s suggestion, but can’t get this to work on my TR. I tested within IE and Outlook 2003 (using Word to compose mail) and the shortcut didn’t work in either. Am I missing something???
Thanks again,
Tom

£ £, hold alt + 0163; by doing that i could get the £ almost in every window’s application.

Erm.. what unicode file? It’s a standard XP install.
As soon as you hit the Alt key most applications invoke the menu bar as it’s assumed to be a menu shortcut.

Don’t tap-and-release the Alt key. Keep Alt and Fn held down while you type in MJOL. Once you release Alt and Fn, you should see a £ appear. On a normal keyboard, that’s Alt+0163 on the number pad. I used to work with a guy who used those codes all the time to communicate with our offices in Germany and France (he was based in the US).

That’s what I’m doing, still nothing. Even typing this message into a browser, holding Alt+Fn and typing MJOL does a carriage return. What application(s) are you able to use that shortcut in?

Hmmm… just tried in two other programs and got the shortcut to work - one was in the keyboard dialog in Control Panel (while looking for any settings!) and the other in Outlook 2003, though it only works in the subject field… typing into the body of the message won’t work. :(

Works for me in IE, Opera, Notepad, Outlook Express and GroupWise. Try changing the browser encoding to Western or UTF-8 if it’s on something strange (View menu).

I agree with you that i cant get mjol to create a £ sign.
You know you can assign a shortcut key or set an autocorrect key to change the symbol or insert one. Go to insert symbol in MS Word and choose an option on the insert symbol window pane.
Bad news though you can’t get the symbol to work in this msg, but it will work for msg in Outlook.

Well sorted it on Outlook message bodies - needed to disable MS Word as the editor for email messages - works fine now. Still can’t get it to work in IE, which is one of the main places I need it. It *does* work in MSN Messenger, which is nice though not essential. I’m sure there’s a trick to IE… just haven’t found it yet.
Thanks all,
Tom

It works in IE if you turn on NumLk first. Then just use the Alt-0163 solution without the Fn key. Then remember to turn NumLk off again or you’ll have numbers all over your typing.
You know, you could have waited a few months and paid a few hundred pound more and you wouldn’t have this problem. Orrrrr, maybe not.
