I doubt a faster rotation speed is either Toshiba’s or Hitachi’s main design goal. The drives are primarily used in MP3 players that don’t really have an operational need for fast sustained speed and usually put a premium on battery life.
There should be an 80GB 1.8” model later this year but it’s likely to also be 4200rpm at the fastest. Drachen has it right and the manufacturers have already said that speed is not a major concern for devices that will be using it. They should still be marginally faster at any rate simply due to the higher density.
I’ve only seen two types of 1.8” HDs: 1 platter and 2 platter models. The 2 platter models are slightly thicker than the single-platter devices, which is why the X505 maxes out at a 20 GB HD (only has space for a single-platter device). The difference between the 40 and 60GB models is that the 40 uses 2 20GB platters and the 60 uses 2of the higher-density 30GB platters. IIRC, a single-platter 30GB model was released alongside the 60GB model.

no?
The current 40GB and 60GB drives on the market both have two platters. Toshiba just increased the areal density to 30GB per platter, and Apple uses the 30GB one platter model in the new low end iPod photo. Later this year, the drives will increase to 40GB per platter, so we’ll have one platter 40GB units and 80GB two platter units.
OK, so, if i wanted to get a new HDD for my T150, (40Gb at the mo.), what is the largest available and compatible? are there any upcoming compatible ones arriving soon? thanx.
Oh and has anyone seen a sexy looking 1.8” enclosure? they all seem to be a bit ugly at the mo.
The biggest generally available is the one in your machine now. The 60 isn’t in general release unless you rip it from an iPod. The sexiest 18” drive enclose I can think of is this one . If you want an external drive, you’re much better off looking at a 2.5” drive.
I wonder if there was a kit out there with which you could just insert 20 gb hard disk and operate your IPOD on it. Just the skin and the chip without the hard disk.

I’ve been looking for something like that too… This is the only thing I can find on the market so far where you simply add your own drive. Unfortunately, this is only available for 2.5” drives. With all these old 3.5” drives I seem to accumulate, this kind of thing would be perfect for a home MP3 player.
