Am I able to access the internet on my TR via bluetooth and a bluetooth-equipped phone?  This would be an awesome solution for mobile browsing without having to buy a smartphone.  I don’t know what speed phones run on these days, but I imagine 56k is feasable.

you can access the internet via any bt phone with dun capability. (gprs/csd) att doesn’t support csd btw.  :cry:

if your device supports EDGE, sure. the average download speeds is aroud 100-130 kbps and upload rates of 50 Kbps to 80 kbps. EDGE is compatible with GPRS technology so GPRS devices would work on the EDGE network (at GPRS speeds) and EDGE devices can run on GPRS networks (at GPRS speeds).

I think I’m going to save my pennies and go for the motorola s710a that’s coming out soon.  I fell in love with it today-too bad I have to wait until november for my verizon contract to run out.  If verizon decides to carry the s710a, that’d be awesome.

The 710a is by Sony Ericsson and it’s an awesome phone. Verizon works on a different technology that the 710a doesn’t support. (CDMA/1xRTT/EV-DO vs GSM/GPRS/EDGE)

Oh I see.  Shows what I know.  Is there any way that I can switch my number/contract to cingular when the 710a comes out and not be paying for two phones?  Or is that just a pipe dream?

Switch your number, yes. Get out of the early cancellation fee, no. You might be able to get Cingular to pay for the fee depending how much it is and what length of time you are willing to commit to Cingular. Don’t bank on it, though. There’s also the matter of getting a data plan to go along with your phone. I suggest you do reasearch or as the people at a place like Howard Forums .

Use a treo 650 with mine for wireless access when I cant find a open network, works smooth and like a charm.

Thing is, the treo is a device intended to be used for the internet.  I’m looking for a phone/mp3 player/high-quality camera type of device that I can also use for the internet on the train and such.  I’m really into consolidation of features:  If I only have to carry one device for my music, phone, and camera with the TR, it’s better than carrying a cell phone and a camera and a treo.  Besides, the mp3/phone/camera would allow me to sell my existing equipment to pay for the damn thing.

I was able to surf the net with my Nokia 3650 (rest in peace… it died :cry: ) it worked great… a 56k connection…
you only need a few settings in your modem settings.. hen pair the 2 together use the phone number dial #99 (i think can dbl check if you want) and there you go..

Treo 650 has a mp3 player feature built in which I use bluetooth headphones to listen to, its also got a camera (althou low quality its acceptable to me) and video capabilities and the memory goes as far as your willing to buy SD cards to dump into it.  I really found it to be a well rounded device.

Mm.  Maybe I’ll check it out then.  I’m looking at the “Clara” from sony Erikkson which is soon to be announced: It has BT, 2 megapixel camera, MP3 playback support, and Memory stick, which goes perfect with the tr.

Anyone have one in the states and wants to recommend a carrier that it works really good with?
