Well I purchased a DVD-R UJ-812B from .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on ebay for 130.00 plus shipping.  A very good price in my book.  I have included some photos as I went through the process.  The DVD-R needs to be modified unless you get an exact drive from sony.  It is easily modified with a good set of scissors or tin snips.  I used scissors and cut off the edge.  You will need to take the top cover off the new drive.

I hope these images will help others.  When you snap the case apart be careful right next to the wireless switch and sound output jacks, there is a plastic snap there.  You will also have to unlock the keyboard cable (pull up on lever) and the trackpad cables (2 which just pull out.)

Works great so far.  Hardrive can be upgraded when the new ones come out.  It is tuff taking the plunge to take apart something this expensive.

What is the best size for the pictures?

The faceplate fit perfect between the two drives.  The drive is exactly the same except for the overhand which is only a thin piece of steel.  No that big of a problem to fix.  YOu could actually leave as is and it would still wotk except one side of the drive would not be mounted.  THe left and rear would have the screws.  May not be an issue but I wanted it fixed on all three sides.

I was wondering if all the UJ-812B have the extra extended flange.  Maybe that is the difference between the UJ-812 and 812B.

I replaced my UJ745 with the UJ812B and the drives were identical physically. I have no idea what the B suffix signifies.

Was your drive for the TR or T-series.

By looking at the internal pictures of the TR drive it is exactly like the 812B I purchased (has the side overhang).  The T-series does not and will require a slight modification to work.
It looked like it would fit without the modification but access to screw the right side down would be impossible.  Chances are with the rear and left screw downs it would be just fine.

That is the processor under the fan.  The hinge cover which contains the power switch is screwed on from the bottom with the longer screw out of all the ones at the bottom.  The other hinge is snapped in, it is removed by pushing it away from the screen.

Hey Spyhunter, comeon!!! If Sony got this one perfect, how could they ever upgrade it?

Personally, I think the T (and TR) are going to go down as classic machines, like the HP 15C.

Actually both my hinge covers are very sturdy with no movement.  I have burned several DVD’s with the drive and I am very pleased with the swap.
