Is a USB2 dvd burner just as good as a firewire 400 burner? http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10186

Am looking at the USB2 version since it can run off USB2 and the firewire 400 uses a different firewire pin than the TR has.

Any feedback on USB2 or firewire burners would be great.

i’d rather have the firewire + a firewire card

i hear 1394 is still faster than the latest usb 2.0

the only problem is the 4 pin 1394 doesn’t have power

Hmm so would the only difference be that the USB2 may be a bit slower?  Would the quality of the burn be the same for a USB2 and firewire 400?

i was going for the freecom fs50 http://www.freecom.com/ with rechargeable li ion battery

The specs on the fs-50 dual layer look pretty similar to the Lacie USB2.  But the Lacie is quite a bit cheaper, lighter, but doesn’t have the rechargable battery….
The rechargable battery isn’t worth double the price IMHO.

drive should be provided with power by notebook ....

in europe the lacie is about 30 bucks cheaper ... so no big deal

Here’s a discussion from the days of yore about firewire vs USB 2.0.

that means that mobile user should go for the usb2.0 solution (fw requires ac adapter), right?

Sony Vaio, I’m heading towards the Lacie USB2 since it’s bus powered, cheaper, and won ‘t have to worry about the 4 pin/adapter.  Performance between USB2 & fw400 seems negligable acording to grOOvy’s post in the link provided by Drachen :
“USB2 is faster than Firewire on paper. USB2 is a “dumb” interface and requires a lot of CPU overhead in order to reach top performance. Firewire has less overhead because of its supporting chipsets. The Oxford 911 (and 922) chipsets alleviate the work the CPU has to do to enable maximum throughput. At any rate, it really doesn’t matter which is faster since most hard disks can’t actually saturate the a 50-60MB/s (400-480Mb/s) bus. The best portable hard disks nowadays can only sustain 20-25MB/s max.” 
I just want something really small & portable, dual layer that can be used btw Macs & PCs when I’m travelling.  Have a regular sized USB2/fw 400 external single layer dvd burner for home use.

I actually bought this drive only a few days ago…. So far it’s been fantastic… Burnt a few dual layer discs… takes about 30mins for a full 9gig. It burns single layer at 8x, so even if it were firewire, I don’t think it would go any faster… takes about 10mins for single layer. I’m using it on a 2ghz Dothan machine, and even if the USB2 uses more cpu, I can’t even notice the performance hit.. I can still do other stuff whilst it’s burning. If your using a TR though, you probably wouldn’t get away with running other programs while it’s burning.
