Hi guys, I got a brand new TR5AP about week ago, and the Belkin Bluetooth GPS on order. I just got done reading the thread + howto on this mod posted by gr00vy0ne, and after reading through it and the comments, it seems the majority love it! But also noticed a few people were having issues like “fans not working” or “usb ports not working sometimes” and things of that nature. For everyone whos had issues directly related to this mod, have you guys resolved them?
Also, has anyone who has done the bluetooth mod ever need to remove it and send it in for Sony Warranty? Did they know that it was installed at one point? For example, if the computer did not turn on… and even though you could remove the physical things, it would have still been in the control panel under devices… I’m just trying to think of the worst case senario.
Please someone come up with a good “pro” answer so that I can go ahead and order the parts. :D
Hey ed,
I don’t think that those issues had anything to do with inserting the bluetooth module…. The USB ports and “Fans” are no-where near the parts you are removing or upgrading. I installed the parts very easily… If you follow the guide you can’t really mess up..
Just make sure you ground yourself while performing the operation as you don’t want to give your TR a nice static shock. You can mess up your whole machine if you shock the board.. just touch something metal, like the leg of a table of chair while you are doing it and you’ll be fine.
My only regret is that I don’t have more stuff that’s Bluetooth! I only have a BT mouse right now. I had a Bluetooth PDA (UX-50) but traded for the TH-55. No great loss but it was fun to play with.
The upgrade was very easy. I was a little timid about opening up my two-month old TR3A but the pictures in the directions were dead-on and it went exactly as described in the directions.
Now I don’t have to deal with a dongle for my wireless mouse. I have used the BT to help people get their pictures off their camera phones but that’s about it.
I would get a BT GPS unit but I already have a navigation system in my car so I don’t really need one.
Thanks for the comments guys, I decided to order it last night. I may or may not install in right away, but wanted it just incase they decided to discontinue the parts.
I still am curious as to results of those who had removed their mods prior to sending it back to Sony for warranty. Was Sony ever the wiser?

I would be more interested to know if anyone left the mod in and had problems with Sony?
[quote author=“tifosiv122”]I did it and had no problems. I wouldn’t think twice about doing it again, much better then a dongle.
Agreed. The only thing I use BT for to this day on my TR is DUN with my phone, and it is so worth not having to deal with a dongle on the train. All I have to do is double-click the dial-up icon.
IMHO the internal mod was worth the premium. Instant connection with the BT mouse, phone and GPS. It may seem silly, but not having to mess with a dongle is really a big thing.
As for repair, I’ve not had occasion to need it. If you use properly sized screwdrivers and don’t damage the screws, I could see no internal seals or tamper guards which would indicate that the unit had ever been opened.

I thought the japanese model came with an internal blueooth chip?
Personally I haven’t had any regrets after installing the internal bluetooth modules. But I have had a lot of reasons why I’m happy I did it! The important thing to remember when you install your own bluetooth module is that you need to be very careful not to break anything and to put everything back together again. Also wearing a grounding band is a good idea so you don’t zap your laptop with some good old fashion electronic killing static electricity.
Thanks for reply i thought it had Bluetooth, but after reading this forum i open my tr5 up to find none. I am eager to do the mod but cant get anyone to supply me the parts. I live in UK.
