I posted this in the hardware section, but it occurrs to me that its better suited to be here.
I’m apparently not the only person who’s seen this problem. Hopefully someone has figured out a fix.

Hello all…
I followed Rahul’s excellent step by step on a clean WinXP install on a TR3 series. Everything went flawlessly (Thanks Rahul!).
Now I’m encountering a video problem that (no surprise) has Sony stumped.
Almost immediately after finishing the prep, I found that if you plug a VGA monitor into the laptop and then FN-F7 to switch sources, Windows crashes and reboots itself. When it comes back up, you’re given the option to report the crash to MS.
I almost immediately got an e-mail back saying this was a known problem and is easily solved by updating the driver from Intel’s website. But that updated driver caused more harm than good. I called Sony and they told me to go back to the original driver from either the DVD or the website. I did that, and things settled down some, but they’re still not right.
If I plug the VGA in and switch sources, it still crashes and reboots. Once its back up, I can switch sources all day. Its just that first time when things don’t happen quite right. I can re-install the driver again, but I’m not sure it’d do any good.
The other issue is clearly related, in that when you switch from VGA back to the LCD, the resolution isn’t displayed properly…it switches back to 1024x768 with black bands on either side. If you hit the magnifying glass button on the LCD, it fixes itself.
Clearly there’s some sort of video driver issue at work here. Might anyone have any ideas?
