I need a 17” monitor. I’ve spent most of today trawling through dozens of sites and I’ve become overloaded with information. I’ve searched this forum but there isn’t a really up-to-date thread that I can find and new models appear every day. Many of you have incredible levels of know-how and access to hardware and I’d be grateful for any guidance.
I don’t have unlimited funds (£300 max, I’m in the UK) but I only have 2 fundamental requirements:
DVI.
Response time low enough for good games and DVD.
I have Sony’s 17” SDM-HS74P/B LCD, and it seems to fall within your budget at $500 USD (£270). It has a 16ms response time, and gaming on it is fine in my experience. Most notably it has XBRITE, which makes it look really good. I’m glad that Sony put it in their desktop LCD line, I love the screens on my TR and S. It also has two backlight tubes compared to one in the TR, so it’s a lot brighter.

I also recommend Sony LCD monitors, I have the 19-inch model with Xbrite and love it. The design is nice and it performs great! I saw the 17-inch model but got the 19-inch because my eyes are pretty bad and can’t handle the greater PPI without strain. Both are awesome though.
Many thanks for your help, you’ve narrowed my choices. I’d love a Sony monitor but prices in the UK are too high. The Sony HS74P/B is lovely but it’s over $700 here. Maybe I can use monitor buying as an excuse for some skiing in New England.
[quote author=“gk31ax”]do a search for sony monitors on kelkoo.co.uk. I did one the other day looking for the exact same thing and there are still 73Bs out there….
I’m sure I saw one for GBP279.00, but I’m also thinking 312….but they are there…..
Thanks. You’re right and it’s tempting but the 73B doesn’t have a DVI interface and I’m keen to use my DVI enabled video card. Maybe I can convince my daughter that she doesn’t really want a doll’s house for Christmas but a nice shiny Sony HS74P/B instead.
[quote author=“Chris687”]My dell 1700 is a great LCD…Its $599USD at dell.com
It’s a nice display, but above his max budget at £350. It’s a shame that electronics in the UK carry a price premium, a friend of mine took a trip to New York and was able to pay for it with the money she saved buying electronics at J&R.
