On my work laptop I have Windows 2000 Professional installed.  I tried installing this into my Firefox 1.0 browser and nothing happens.  Does this extension of yours only work in Windows XP or some other OS?

I did get it to work finally.  Firefox was preventing me from installing it, so I had to tell it that it was a “safe” application, and it worked!  However, I wasn’t too thrilled with it since you had to tell it what kind of HTML format you wanted everytime you wrote an email.  If it could save the format that you prefer instead of losing it everytime you close the browser, then I would use it regularly.  I might give it another try when later releases of it come out though.

Is IE really that bad? cuz like, I havne’t experience any trouble YET, but I’m thinking about switching. However, after reading some of the stuff that I needed to download in order to have the same enjoyment with IE, I kinda backed out a lil bit. There’s like 5 ~ 7 different files other than the firefox to download + install. and also wondering, how many of you guys are still on IE? just curious…..

The default install of firefox is way ahead of IE…The addons for firefox make it more customizable.. Why include everything in the main release? not everyone wants everything…the extensions make it easier for the browser to be what you want it to be.
Not doing yourself a favour by not trying a new proven technology..

And yes IE is that bad…
IE hasn’t been updated in 2 years..
IE is tied to the OS….
IE has weekly security warnings released…that aren’t address for months.

Speaking of Firefox and why it’s better than IE…

One of the goals that has been assigned to me here at work is to come up with an IT process that can be improved, and I am really wanting to do a proposal to replace all the IE browsers with Firefox in the office.  There are over 400 workstations here, and it would be a big project to implement something like this.  I am wondering if anyone here has ever written up a major proposal like this, presented to Upper Management in a fairly large corporate environment, and actually got the stamp of approval to commence with the project of implementing it throughout the office.  Any suggestions on how to tackle something like this?  I have some ideas on this, but I just wanted to see if others had done this before.

The biggest issue with Firefox/Mozilla from an IT standpoint is the lack of central management. IE can be reasonably managed after rollout with policies, but I am unaware of a similar mechanism for Firefox. Also make sure you’re not using ActiveX or IE-specific DHTML on your corporate intranet or important partner sites. That’s our biggest stumbling block. It would take a significant amount of time and energy to make our current intranet Firefox-compatible.

Drachen, those are points that I have brought up to myself, and there has to be a fairly easy way to manage implementation and support of this browser office-wide.  I suppose I’ll have to work with our Web Developers to see if Firefox would be supported, before I even think about pursuing this adventure.  Thanks for the info.

I think that will definitely help me out.  I will look further into it when I have more available time, but that is definitely a start.  I’m not sure how my manager would feel about using someone’s setup like that, but then again Firefox is all open-source so who knows.  I think it’s well worth the effort though.
