FWIW Zealots originated in the Jewish tradtion.

Much of the conflict in the world today is fomented and sustained by religous zealots. They play well into the hands of politicians who happily use the discord for their own ends.

Zealotry refers to cases where activism and pride in relation to a ideology have become excessive to the point of being harmful to others, oneself, and one’s own cause. Particular aspects can focus on religion, politics, but can also apply to any other area where partisanship and its related dogma are fostered and encouraged. A zealous person is called a zealot.
While “excess of zeal” may be used to refer to very common and individual instances of excess, “zealotry” tends to be reserved for cases where excess zeal is shared with others, and has formed or merged with a dogma; typically with ideological self-perpetuation as among its primary foundations. The espoused use of force and violence to propagate the ideology, is a common characteristic of this self-perpetuation; perhaps inline with the “ends justify the means” rationale.

Well, i appreciate you clearing it up. Honestly, I didn’t find it offensive and not because I think it’s ok to knock on anyone’s religion. dbs merely mentioned religious zealots and not religious people. I think the two are very distinctive. I respect that both you (and TS) are religious people and you are willing to share your knowledge and love to those who would like to learn and those who share your beliefs. You’re not fanatically forcing it upon anyone (which is zealous) and rather, simply leading by example.

No offense intended but I certainly didn’t single out Christianity nor was my remark pointed at any world religion. Personally I find much to admire in all the major traditions.

That said, I have no use for those who would force their ideology on others through legislation, coercion or violence. If that offends, so be it.
