[quote author=“writetovarun”]So processes such as ripping video off my handicam, or encoding a MPEG file to other formats would be faster ?
Again, it depends. When you’re running those processes, how much memory is being used? Are you exceeding your physical memory? Only you can determine that.
In terms of direct encoding…most likely no. That’s a primarily CPU-bound task. The actual task of transferring video (you’re not really ripping) is more of a HARD DISK related task. There is some CPU overhead but it’s not something that requires a lot of RAM.
The only place where more RAM will help you out is when editing your video clips ASSUMING your hitting your 1GB RAM ceiling. So, you really need to run your regular tasks and hit CTRL+ALT+DEL to see how much memory you’re running.
