I have half a mind to actually try upgrading my TR3 with 802.11b to 802.11a/b/g, using the Intel Pro Wireless 2915abg assuming I can get hold of one.  The other half of my mind says I’m crazy to even think of attempting it.

Anyway, it occured to me that 802.11b and g both operate on 2.4GHz while 802.11a operate on 5GHz.  Is the built-in antenna designed to work in both bands?  If the antenna is not designed to work in 5GHz, the board will eventually be damaged when accessing an 802.11a network.  Then just going with an 802.11b/g solution (Intel Pro Wireless 2200BG) would be best.

Yes, it can handle 5GHz. In Japan, the TR models came with 802.11a capable models. Also, from the service manual I’ve seen, there’s no different part number for a different antenna.

I’ve installed the Intel Pro Wireless 2915abg, and it works pretty good.

Thanks groovyone and tactical, you both have certainly eased my concerns.  All I need now is the courage to do major surgery on my beloved TR.  :?  I’m excited over the prospect though, and am very thankful for your valuable first-hand information and the step-by-step procedure.

Are there both 3A and 3B versions of the same card, or have I got confused?

Replying to my own post - it turns out there are indeed both 3A and 3B versions of this card. I’ve just successfully installed an Intel 2915 type 3B card (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6820841373&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT&rd=1, if it lasts) using groovyone’s instructions (thanks!) and it works fine. One slight curio - to start with I just allowed Windows to install the drivers for the card, but carried on using the Zero Configuration to manage connections. It worked fine, up to the point where I used the hardware wireless/BT switch - it would switch off okay (perhaps not too surprisingly) but when I switched it back on, Zero Configuration refused to reconnect to the network. The card appeared to be alive (it would list networks fine) but it seemed to think it was already connected. It would only give me a “disconnect” option for a network I wasn’t already connected to, and clicking on that didn’t actually do anything. I had to reboot before it would reconnect.

I’m not sure that makes any sense, but I doubt anyone’s finding it interesting anyway.

To cut an even longer story short, it all worked fine when I allowed the Intel software on the supplied CD to manage my wireless connections instead.

I just bought a Netegriti card off ebay and I am having some problems with it, It gets picked up by windows and I go to install the drivers (that I got from here and the supplier) except that at the very end it says “Device could not start” (CODE 10), Im running windows XP SP2 (upgraded about 3 weeks ago)

Does anyone know what this could be?

Does anyone have a link or file with the latest Atheros client utility.  I’m going to install the Netegriti 500 card in my TX, and I prefer the Atheros utility as compared with the one provided with this card.

If you didn’t already know PhilVaioFan, 802.11N is the new standard, currently installed in Apple Macbook Pros. Linksys is already supporting this faster band so check out the thread below. As I stated, I am hoping Intel will make one for our TRs.
