I need your help, I d like to set up a wireless network in my house. Just like 2 pc on wireless. I use a cable connection, so I got one of those old fashion cable modems from my provider :D
But I don t know what kind of router I should get… the only thing I know is that I don t wanna spend to much money ( I ve seen there are some netgear’s around 75 €). So what s the difference between the brands…
Can you guys please give me your advice
thanks
I went to wallmart and got the cheapest g router they had. I got the Motorola WRS850G. I got it cuz it was the cheapest; i think i paid $60. Has 4 ethernet ports and the wireless aspect… I have been happy. Motorola was very helpful over the phone with helping me set it up the first time. They spent like an hour on the phone with me and I give them an AAA rating for customer support…
Some people on this forum like netgear while some like linksys. I too like linksys…it works very well with my TR (WRT54G as mentioned by linc). I’ve never tried netgear so I wont comment anything about it. It’s really upto you which one you want.
FWIW I have the Linksys WRT54GS, same as linc and Rahul but with the speedbooster technology. I’ve been happy with it.
If you stick to current production in a name brand you should be safe whatever you buy. While the 802.11/b units are cheap, I wouldn’t go anything less than /g and the speedbooster (or whatever the mfg. calls it) only runs about $10 more.
You may be able to find comparitive reviews at PCMag.com or one of the other on-line magazines. Your router/hub/access-point is not the place to pinch pennies.
Waouw i m so amaized how many answers i got, and specially how fast you guys answered me. Thanks a lot. I now have a lot of reviews to read .. :D
the thing is i have now a http://www.qtec.info/products/product.htm?artnr=13539 but haven t been able to make it work. :(
A friend of mine comes tomorrow to help me out. he tested it this week end and told me that since it works with an old protocol it may be slower ...
I have the linksys as well, the only thing is setting, got to be very careful
with the MTU setting, sometimes you have to ajust it a little bit to suit
the websites.
I’ve noticed that no-one on here has ever mentioned the 3Com wireless products. I have a router and two cards here at my house in uni, and I got my parents a router and wireless cards as well. I’ve never had any trouble with any of their products.
On the other hand I have had trouble with both netgear and belkin stuff…
I heard very good comments on 3Com as well, but when i was making the
purchase, linksys was cheaper, and according to the retailer, linksys got a
stronger transmitting power.

You realize that the speedbooster doesn’t do anything unless you’re using a linksys wireless nic that supports it, right? Basically…useless for the tr.

I too have had problems with belkin…I picked up 2 wireless b routers from Microcenter for 60 each (- a rebate of 40 on each router) and it gave me a lot of troubles since it needed to be switched off and on every few hours…replaced it with the Linksys WRT54G and never faced that problem again. My uncle has an old SMC router and my TR would work fine with it for a FEW secs and then for some reason I couldn’t browse any website. I’ve had 1 of their wireless cards as well and that too gave me problems…so I’ll never be trying another belkin or SMC product.

I have two other PCs on the network with /gs cards. FWIW some of the articles I’ve read indicate a slight performance boost in mixed b/g networks. I’m not “pushing” speedbooster by any means, but since I was implementing my wireless network with all new hardware the cost differential wasn’t enough to be an issue.
Ok i got the Q tec working but not under my cable provider but at my sister’s. It seems that my provider blocks some ports… so screw them !!! i m off for the adsl.. plus.. there are special rates for students now ( 30/month instead of 40). So i m now looking for a adsl routeur mdem. I like the netgears i found the Netgear DG 834G and the DG 834 GFS although i don t see the difference beside the price.. can anybody help me..
tks
