And why are you saying that about the keyboard? The Japanese ones will have US keys in sub-writing usually… And if not. How hard will it be to open it up and change it?
Hope you end up liking the decision you made… Your gonna have to tell us in-depth how it turns out wither way… You may start an x505 revolution… But, shucks, Best Buy doesn’t carry it (guess it isn’t meant for ... me)
I have to agree with tifosiv122. The TR is just a tad heavy/bulky for college students like us and it’s hard to carry it around and avoid getting it scratched up at the same time. I also don’t like all the attention I’m getting working on it.
If/When I get an X505 too, I’d still like to keep my TR3A, or else buy a TR1 for a good/cheap(preferable) or reasonable price, just as a desktop. I just LOVE the screen quality AND the built-in CD-RW/DVD drive AND the built-in Wifi and blue-tooth capability. It’s just a pretty “all-in-one” machine.
i don’t find it practical for college. granted it’s a lb lighter, you also don’t have a cd-rom drive. i don’t think i can pass up movies for that thing.
Personally, I find it hard to believe that you guys think that 3.1lbs is too heavy for school. I know the X505 is a pound lighter but with its shorter battery life you’re going to have to bring a spare battery and/or AC adapter anyways which would add up to the weight of the TR (or more). I can understand the bulky issue a little more but that’s just an excuse for you to get a “better” bag!
Of course, this is coming from the guy who takes his 4.2lb “brick” S170P to classes on his mountain bike 3 days a week (12 miles per roundtrip) and barely notices it.
My TR is too bright, lol. I have a friend, Josh, who’s also involved in the Senate and many extra-curriculars, and brings his laptop with him WHEREVER he goes, including classes and meetings, or just out in the Pecan Court to relax and study with it. He passed up the TR for an IBM X40 for the black casing so he wouldn’t “get noticed much” ( and price too, I guess ). The X40 is VERY thin, though not as thin as the X505.
Likewise, there’s been a few fellow students who’ve been crowding around my TR just because of the camera and the bright matte finish that says “Vaio” on the back and the internal CD-Drive.
The X505 may be an attention-grabber by its thinness, but minus the “extra” eye-candy features. And it’ll be smaller/thinner, more convenient to carry. I’ve never seen an X505 in real life before, but I’m actually kind of excited about it.
OnMyWayUp - I understand there are English characters on the board but there are also keys that are not needed that will take up space, I think one of those makes the space key itself smaller.
Linc - Right on!
jso902 - I am hoping one of you guys is like me and nuts enough to buy something and resell the parts you don’t want.
Concura - I thought the same way too, but I never use my optical drive…
FrodoID - No I have not seen one in person…and now that I live in MI odds are I won’t. I am buying it blind.
jso902 - Like I said, I really haven’t used my optical drive, except to load apps, that I could do over a network.
Guest - My TR is the center of attention in class…the x505 will be so much worse, it is a hot looking PC.
gr00vy0ne - Take the Vaio, then 3 1,500 page books, 2 notebooks, folder, sony digital recorder, pens, etc….my bag weighs a ton and I have a bad back…every pound (plus the thickness) counts.
Phew. Thanks for all the good lucks…I really hope it sells, I love my TR, I just need something a bit lighter…i’d like smaller, but thats not happening right now.
Wow, with you selling your TR2a it’s the end of an era…lol. I haven’t seen the X505 in reality either, but in a search to get pictures I came across the Cnet review of the X505 which isn’t completely favorable, but they have a video which lets you kind of grasp the dimensions of this notebook more so than in the pictures.
CJMPower - Yeah I saw the review…he missed the point of the device…when your looking at the x505 you cant compare it to other $3k notebooks…it has no optical drive, maxes out at 512, small HD…so, yes it seems way overpriced.
Seeing it (I think they have the US version) makes me want it more, especially when he shows how well its made and how strong it seems.
The battery needs to last me 3 hours, thats all I really need at one time.
Tifosiv, I finally checked out your website. Wow, were kind of similiar…scary. Except where you like Mercedes….I like BMW (sorry I love BMW, mom’s a fan of mercedes). At my house in Ocean City, I have it networked with a 5 port switch, 802.11b/g, and as for computers:

-Home built 400 mhz Pentium 2 Professional Edition, GeForce 2 768mb of Ram
-Compaq Presario P1 166mhz, Voodoo 2 graphics cards (2 of them)
Notebooks

-Sony TR3A (1 gig of ram, win xp pro)
PDA’s
-Sony UX50
-Dell Axium
As for your models, have you ever bought from Exoticar? There’s a store just down the block from the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan
hey tif… didn’t mean to downplay the idea. to everyone their own. my last laptop was a vaio 505F. the x505 is basically a 505F bumped into the future. The looks are similar and they’re both catered to the same crowd. I’m glad that machine works well for you. I loved my 505F, i just loved watching movies and chatting on the webcam at the same time. and since i keep screwing up my computer. i got sucked into the TR world :D
CJMPower - Yes, ive been buying from them for years…actually I proposed to the owner’s wife (when he wasn’t around) {it was a joke, but I really did ask and get down on one knee}. I drove to Framingham (when their warehouse was there) several times to pick up $400-750 worth of models in one shot.
I refuse to buy BMWs because of issues with them and Israel.
jso902 - I want the x505 because of it’s size/weight, nothing more, nothing less. I love the TR, don’t get me wrong, its just a bit too big/heavy for me right now.
