[quote author=“Chris687”]I don’t understand why people are paying preium price on those ipods. Doesn’t even play viedo.,..;.;
You got me
I can answer that…honestly, I hate apple, its the best damn thing i’ve used. I have had many Mp3 players, this one is just light years ahead. But if you look at it, its fairly reasonable considering…$70 more then the Dell, $100 less then the Sony…i’d say the premium is now on the Sony products…
I think that rounds out the top 5 competitors and shows how really out-of-whack Sony’s price positioning is. With the exception of the cut-rate DJ20, everything else is within $30 of the iPod.
I’m sure that Sony US gets its marching orders at least partly from Japan. Every Japan-based company I’ve ever dealt with is tightly controlled from the land of the rising sun in terms of what product they’re allowed to have and when. Remember the big deal about how the NZ90 was the first (and as of yet only) North America-only Clie?
Didn’t you get a fairly inexpensive one that took memory sticks? I thought I remember on a post you talking about one. I’ve seen some good no name ones at fry’s. Well, at least they look good.
I think Drachen made an excellent point about this (mp3 players) earlier about how most people don’t care about portable video…at least in a device that small and that you can do lots of stuff while listening to music whereas watching video takes your full attention so you can’t do much when watching.
Also, on these tiny devices…why would you want to watch video on them? I still haven’t figured out a situation where I would want to squint and watch tiny video on a device that lasts maybe 3 hours. My TR and S can do that and last much longer…
That said…Sony is pricing themselves out of the market. Their arrogance is going to bite them pretty badly…well they’re already bitten.
I never understood also grOOvy why people would want to watch video on small little screens. But, I am sure that there are people that can’t believe we use our TR as notebooks
I think another huge mistake for Sony is not fully utilizing the very nice “jog dial” technology on their audio players…they do use if on the HiMD MZ-NH1 though…on the remote and it’s real nice. It makes it easy to scroll through your songs and is easy to read.
Bring back JOG DIAL!
Yeah, I just think movies aren’t as killer (yet). Part of it is the battery issue…they stuff needs to last longer…and be slimmer. I went and looked at the new Portable Media Players (from Creative, Archos) and they’re bulky and they just seem a little awkward. They are neat for music since they can display album covers and stuff and it’s easier to glance at them.

I agree the portable media players need to advance, but Sony’s offering is at the same price point and does so much less…how can they justify the price among the execs?
I wouldn’t mind one if I took public transportation. But, I don’t and can’t see any use except for as another toy to enter my electronic drawer or more like room…
And yes as they get more advanced I am sure they will work better with batter life, slimmer, and just feel better in your pocket.
But, then I say why not combine all these features in a cell phone. That would be kewl.
Well, my thought is electronics are always changing. I would love to see whats going to be out in like 10 years.

I’ve watched movies on my treo, which is as combined as we can get, fairly large screen…yet very annoying compared to my portable media player. But your right, overall its just a toy, nobody really needs it…

they did that in the SE P800/900 series. i got the P900 but i never got myself into watching movie on it. but i did use it to listen to mp3 occasionally when my ipod is not around.
the idea of making them all-in-one is good but they have to make it right.
