So, I thought I’d start off this new section with the question…in addition to your swanky new Sony TR, do you also use a desktop system? If so, please post specs/pics! :D
I’ll start it off…my main workstation is this:
Soldam Polo R
Pentium 4 2.4Ghz (533FSB)
2 GB of PC2100 DDR
80GB Seagate Barracuda IV 7200RPM Hard Disk
DVD/CDRW Panasonic 8122B SlimType Slot Loading drive
ATI Radeon 9700 128MB
I also have a backup “server” for testing…
Shuttle SN41G2
Athlon XP 1600+
1GB of PC2100 DDR
80GB Seagate Barracuda IV 7200RPM Hard Disk
200GB Maxtor DiamondMax 7200RPM Hard Disk
ATI Radeon 9600 256MB
Might as well toss my hat into the ring. I’m with you all the way, apyyc101. I’ve been using this same rig in about the same configuration for almost 4 years now. I’ve only had to upgrade the HD after my old one failed and I’ve increased the memory.
It’s loud, big and ugly:
Pentium III 1 Ghz
ASUS P3V4X
640 MB SDRAM
80GB Seagate 7200RPM
Guillemot GeForce 3
Soundblaster Live! Platinum
Whatever you may think of it, this rig runs just about every game I can toss at it at 1280x1024, which is the native resolution of my LCD monitor. (The only exceptions so far being Unreal 2, UT2K3, Deus Ex2 and Star Wars: KotOR) I’m looking at upgrading to an Athlon FX-51 and Radeon 8900 Pro at the end of the year and putting it all in the same damn ugly box. 8)
Drachen- How much did that Athlon 64 FX set you back? I just picked up an Athlon 64 3000+ for ~$200, not a bad price/performance ratio at all. I put the saved CPU money into a Radeon 9800XT and Logitech Wireless KB/Mouse. Unfortunately I’m building the machine for a buddy, so there’s about a month before he gets back in town to pick it up. Deus Ex 2 and Max Payne 2 until then!
I got it at Newegg for about $750 . My theory on desktop computing is to buy the top-of-the-line and let it ride for a while. Last time I put together a machine like this was almost 4 years ago. That sort of economics works out in the end…
Max rocks, but DX2 was somewhat disappointing. It was way too short and had a bunch of problems with the interface and the graphic engine. Lately I can’t get enough of Call of Duty, Jedi Academy or Knights of the Old Republic.
Over the holiday weekend I got a fantastic deal on a Hitachi/IBM Deskstar 180GB with 8MB cache for $69 (after $110 in rebates) at Fry’s Electronics. I recently installed in my main desktop system replacing my “old” 80GB Seagate Barracuda. It’s not really old as it’s like 14 months old. Having 100GB of extra space also helps too when working on DV stuff.
The new drive is equally quiet and just a tad bit warmer but the performance is phenomenal. This thing simply flies. I didnt’ expect too much upgrading a 7200RPM drive to another 7200RPM drive but the higher areal density and 8MB cache makes a huge difference. It feels like my system has been giving new life and should hold me over for my next upgrade (maybe at the end of this year once all the new stuff comes out).
So, new specs are: Soldam Polo R
Pentium 4 2.4Ghz (533FSB)
2 GB of PC2100 DDR
180GB Hitachi Deskstar 7200RPM (8MB cache) Hard Disk
DVD/CDRW Panasonic 8122B SlimType Slot Loading drive
ATI Radeon 9700 128MB
Like many of you, I build my own clunker and “let it ride” for a while. This thing isn’t even worthy of a pic unless I feel like making you guys believe that I am not hardware savvy (or if you are looking for a good laugh) I basically have a 10x uglier system than Drachen’s with similar specs. Here it goes:
AMD 950 (K7 board)
640mb SDRAM
Onboard graphics (64mb)
Soundblaster Live!
80 GB Western Digital 7200 8mb cache
CDRW
Yamaha speakers with Sub
Go ahead, someone ask me to post a pic…
First, how do I post a pic, I’m not a forum groupie (this one is my first)
I built my first machine back in 93, when it was actually cheapter to do such a thing. Now that im out of college and have a decent paycheck I treat myself to the latest right out of the box.
My latest is the Sony PCG-PZ36G.
Its a great machine. I am looking to upgrade again this christmas but im not completely sold on the whole Windows Media Edition. I think Sonys stuff is a bit better.
That’s hooked up to the first computer, the “music” computer. It’s my main machine, since music is my job. No surfing on that machine, nothing other than music stuff to keep the latency down.
The board is the Logic Control system from eMagic, which works with their Audio Logic software, the number one pro software today. ProTools is #1 in North America, but everywhere else it’s Logic Audio. Usually every song in any of the European charts is done with this system.
