Hey everyone, I’m a new member…these forums are great..props to all of you that keep them that way…

Just wanted to tell everyone I just got a new tr5 today…but I have some questions on exactly which model it is…cuz my specs are different from any other model i’ve seen so far…here they are

1.1 pentium m
768mg RAM(i always thought it had 1 gig of ram?)
DVD/Cd-R drive but no DVD burner (which i thought was standard)
All the other specs are the same just the drive and ram are different…
anyone ever heard of these kinda specs?

I bought this directly from SONY in dubai so i know everything is legit….i know the ram is a bit less but the upside to all this is that it only cost me 2100$ BRAND NEW…. :D

Sounds like a great system.  I am sorry if you thought you had something different.  But, it sounds like you know your specs. 

On the upside is is easy to upgrade the ram.  But you probably have one stick of 512 and one 128.  So you would simple take out the stick of 128 and add another stick of 512. 

For the drive, You’ll have to wait for someone experienced on that to chime in.  I have a TR3A.  it has pretty much the same specs.

1ghz
512ram
no burner (dvd)
40 gig hd

Telll you what I don’t miss having a dvd burner.  I don’t even use the one on my desktop.  As for the ram it does the job.  ANd does it well.  I also have xp home.  I once upgraded it to the pro.  Still no difference for what I use it for.

I love this machine more and more everyday.  I am still curious with the new technology and I am always looking for the next best thing that I will through in my wish list.  I’ve had this machine for over 6 months and I am extremly happy.

I use it way more then my desktop.  That is twice as fast and powerful.

Great things come in small packages.

I think the only thing I did have to get use to….And I am sure others will agree.  was to the keyboard.  But now it very comfortable.  Anyway enjoy your new toy, tool, another hand.

according to the specs off sonystyle.com..it suspose to be 1gb of ram & dvd-rw..but for what you paid..you can get that addition 512mb..add the dvd-rw and still have plenty left over..

do u mean i paid too much for what I got? or vice versa? i’m a bit confused..cuz i haven’t seen the fully loaded tr5 on the net for less than 2700$ (with dvd-burner and 1 gig of ram) ..so basically i’m missing 128 ram and the dvd drive…I will upgrade the ram i dont need the DVD drive..i was just wondering if anyone even knew that these specs were an option on the tr5? and i miscalculated a little bit..it is actually closer to 2000 bucks than 2100 bucks but same difference 8)

By the way i’m not in the military
I just graduated from dental school in pakistan..and i’m going to NYU to specialize in cosemtic dentistry..i needed an ultraportable and without a doubt i though the tr5 would be ideal…

Chris you meant 1 x 512MB and 1 x 256MB right?  :wink:  Replacing the 256 to 512 (to make it 1G) should cost pretty cheap.

In this thread, a person needed there TR3 to be identified.  They had bought theirs at the SonyStyle store in HK, which strangely enough gave them a TR3 with 768mb of RAM….how weird.

Your specs would be the same as the TR5 for the Australian and Singaporian versions of the TR. Check out http://www.sonystyle.com.au to confirm this.

The 768MB size comes from Sony’s odd fascination with releasing different memory configurations in different markets. For whatever reason, Sony released the Asian market models with 256MB standard while the US market had 512MB standard (1x512MB in Pro models).

So, for many Asian market customers, the only logical upgrade is to 768MB as it would require dumping the included 256MB chip in order to go to 1GB of memory.

I find this odd as the Asian language versions of Windows typically require “more” memory than the English language version due to the IME software that needs to be loaded.
