I suspect we’re going to reach the reasonable limits of resolution and format. At some point even bigger becomes too big to be useable in a desktop situation. One problem with LCDs is the slow deterioration of the backlight. With constant use this can take only a few years.
The manufacturers have been lucky. Every 18 months there’s a new, bigger, better consumer target. What happens when resolution finally surpasses human vision and folks decide that anything bigger than 30 inches is just to big and busy to use effectively? A well designed CRT can easily last a decade.
