it started last week and now it happens on and off.  i have no idea what it is but it is a very strange tinny/whirling metallic sound.  anyone else have this going on?  or have an ideas what it can be?

Are you referring to the CPU fan? It turns on and off depending on the load of your system. I swear mine originally wasn’t as noticeable as it is now. It’s still whisper quiet but I do hear it too.

maybe i am not sure.  does yours sound tinny (metal) sounding.  i could hear it from across the room.

Actually, I now think it may be the hard disk making the sound…based on the diagrams I’ve seen of the internal layout…it seems that the source of the noise is where the hard disk would be. I’m going to have to investigate…if I have time later I might open up my system to see where it’s coming from…

I’ve noticed the same thing on my TR2, and I think it indeed is the hard drive. I have a 2GB Toshiba PCMCIA hard drive that’s about 3 years old now, and it sounds the exact same way, only a lot louder.

Of course heat is one of the things that shortens a hard drive’s life span, and being located right next to the Pentium-M chip probably isn’t the best spot. Mine gets pretty toasty around the left palmrest area during normal usage. Let’s hope for a long service life on these hard drives!

Rabbitt, I think the same thing just started for me.  It’s almost assuredly not the hard drive.  The sound is, as you mentioned, a whirling sound.  The closest I can think of is that the fan is striking something else lightly.  Could that be possible?

Yes, to me it seems as if the fan has gotten louder than it was on day 1.  I think this is just a matter of our ears getting accustomed to the sound.

i havent heard that sounds in awhile.  but you know i dont even care anymore i have the CDW/Sony Warranty and not that i will intentionally break the tr2 i woulnt do that but i can sure hope the tr2 dies right about the time of the tr4 release

What’s the policy on the Sony warranty?

i bought the cdw accidental damage protection 3 yr warranty so hopefully i am covered for all unless it gets stolen.
